Hi, I'm 17 years old. I will be a TARHEEL come fall!
My goal on advicenators is to give advice based on what I really think, not what I think you'll like to hear. Everything that I say comes from personal experience.

Hey. I'm 15/female, and I'd say I have pretty bad skin..
Actually, I have terrible skin. It has scars from past acne and there's always new acne patches on either my forhead, temples, chin, or sometimes all three. I don't think I have the money for a dermatolagist, so I was wondering what foods I can eat/ exercises I can do to help with bad skin? Or any facewashes (besides proactiv, that's expensive) that would help? Thanks! (link)
|
I've had a ton of acne since I was 12. Only recently (I'm now 17) has it really began to clear up.
I would definitely, absolutely recommend Loreal Skin Genesis Deep Purifiying Foaming Cream Cleanser & Dr. Sheffield's ClearZit Acne Cream.
You can get the first one from Wal-Mart. It costs about $5.98 and is in a pink bottle. The second one can only (I think) be found at Dollar General for only $1.
Wash your face in the morning, and before bed with the face wash. Before bed, after cleaning your face, apply some face moisturizer/lotion on your face, then apply the acne cream on the areas where you have acne. You need the lotion so the acne cream doesn't dry your face up too much.
Hope this is helpful. :)

My 17-year-old son, "Seth," is set to go off to college. He is going to a state university about 20 minutes from our home.
When filling out the paperwork for school, I did not sign him up to live on campus. His behavior during his senior year was less than stellar. I felt he needed to prove himself a little before I spent the money for him to live on campus. He's furious with me, and I admit I am second-guessing my decision as I talk to other parents whose kids are all living on campus.
I want my son to be independent. I told him if he did well the first semester he could live there the second semester. Did I do the right thing? (link)

I also agree that this is weird.
I believe I just saw this in the Dear Abby section in the newspaper.

Since Christmas time is coming up, I have car insurance payments to make, I will be starting college next year, and my family is tight on money right now, it is time for me to start looking for a partime job. I applied about a month ago at a shoe store. I never received a call, so I am assuming my application was not up to par. I need tips on filling out an application.
My mother helped me fill out my last one, and I do not agree with the way she told me to fill it out. She told me to make myself seem much better than I actually am. I worked at Subway last summer, [Family member was manager, which is why I received the job] and insteand of putting "Subway," she told me to put "Sandwhich Artist." And she also told me to put that I was experienced with fax machines and cashiers [Which hold no bearing on working at a shoe store, nor am I truely experienced with them]. Basically, the whole application was cheesy. So does anyone have any tips on what to write in application?
Also, if I do get a call back, what are some tips for job interviews for a part time job? (link)
|
Hi. Although your mother is right in saying that you should make myself appear better, writing "Sandwich Artist" instead of "Subway" is not the best way to do this. (When I first read that, I really did LOL). It is perfectly acceptable to say that you worked at Subway.
My question is, what kind of job are you seeking? Saying that you have experience with fax machines and cashiers is good when you are working at an office job, like a doctor's office, or City Hall, or if you are applying at a grocery store or retail store. It is always good to say that have "experience dealing with customers" (although you may want to paraphrase that).
Hope this helps, and good luck on your job search. :)
By the way, I would suggest that you apply to work at a Kmart store, if there is one where you live. When you are done with your application, you should be able to set up an interview date and time. This way, you will have a fair enough chance. The Kmart where I live is currently seeking applicants for seasonal workers (4 months).

i have recently took a long break from dance (long story...) but anyways i need to find something else that will make me happy.
i was thinking of joining xc or track..
any other suggestions??
thanks, (link)
|
Definitely consider trying tennis. It is amazingly fun, especially compared to cross country and track (both of which I have done). I am immensely better at running than tennis--I have only started playing around a month--but tennis is way worth it. :)

I just recently moved into a new city and I really wanted to apply at a flower shop or pizza place, as a delivery person. Is it even worth my time applying even though I just moved here and don't really know my way around perfectly. Or is that something left for someone that's actually lived here for a few months/years?
I'm sure this is probably common sense, and you're going "duh". But I'm just not sure!
Thanks! :) (link)

Hi. If you want to know how to get from place to place, you should definitely consider buying a GPS navigation system, if you don't already have one.
My sister got one for about $100. It is a Magellan and it works really well--just plug it into your cigarette lighter.
I think it would be money well-invested if you got the job.
That's all I can think of. Hope I helped. :)

Hey. I'm 14/F and my friend is 13/F. She was diagnosed with Luekimia last month. Can anyone think of thinks a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD can do, someone with very little money on her hands, to raise some money or help out my friend Caroline. I really want to help, and someone else has already organized a walk to raise money so that idea is out. Any ideas would be very much appreciated and I do rate.
Thanks.
P.S. I don't know what kind of luekimia she has but I know she has started Chemo already and she's really sick due to the side affects of it.
And the ideas don't have to raise money, but if it's something that can make her feel a little better, or comfort her please let me know, I want to do anything it takes to help her. (link)

Hi.
You can set up an auction-- ask local companies, such as restaurant to donate items and services. Then contact your newspaper for publicity. Ask an adult to help you.
You can also, as the other advicenators said, ask for donations at your school for your friend. Set up a donation box in each classroom, do a competition between classes for most money raised (prize is an ice cream party, etc.)...
or a drawing to pie a teacher in the face.
That sort of thing.
Hope I helped, and your friend gets better.

should i just shave off all my hair and wear a wig? im sick of my silky, limp, volume-less asian hair! (link)
|
No! Lol. Be proud of your asian hair. I'm Chinese, btw.
Truthfully, I think you have to damage it some-- this doesn't mean frying your hair. No, what you should do is blow-dry your hair (assuming you don't already)... use the curling iron even to just straighten your hair... cut your hair to a style that makes your hair seem thicker, with layers. Around shoulder length or perhaps a bit longer.
Shampoo and condition (preferably higher-quality volumizing types) every day. Towel dry, then use a bit of mousse... blow dry, and while blow drying, brush out from the roots. Flip your hair upside down and brush. Then, you can spritz some hairspray through your hair. Toss your hair.
Tell me how it works. :)
All in all, don't shave your hair, unless you really really want to.

Please don't answer this is you're going to be really mean and insensetive.
Lately I've felt so lonely, and I know I do not need a boy to make me happy, it just sucks because its my nature to want to love someone, and be loved back. All my friends seem to be in a relationship, and I know you dont need to be, especially in highschool since they normally dont last, but that still doesnt change how I feel about it.
How am I supposed to put myself out there?
I really dont have a lot of guy friends..
please help? (link)
|
Hi, I know exactly what you mean. But the truth is, you really do need to put yourself out there.
Be smiley; be happy; let yourself be noticed (but don't be obnoxious!) However, don't act like you desperately want a boyfriend. Here's how your outlook should be: "Sure a boyfriend would be nice. But being single is pretty great too."
Think about it like that, even if you don't find it to be a true statement.
Never let go of your standards and go out with someone merely because he likes you and asks you out. It's good to be choosy in love. Also, never change yourself so someone will like you.
Take small steps. If you're in a group with a guy in a class, talk to him. Ask him about class, express a feeling you think he might share: "That test was so hard! I'm scared." Ask him for help even if you don't need it. That sort of thing.
And me, i don't have very many guy friends either. Just a few here and there. The key to making those friends, though, is talking to them.
And, if there's just a small, small feeling you have that someone you like, likes you back... they probably do! I have heard that many times and it might just be true. Take this, for instance.
There is this guy in my class, who I've only talked to maybe 10 times, ever, in the past year.
Well... I added him on myspace and he commented me, complimenting me on my choice of music-- he said one of my bands listed (of perhaps 15) is his favorite band. Of course, that doesn't seem like a big deal, but to me it was. I mean, a random post like that... who knows what it means?
So basically the point of that story is that you should get a myspace or facebook, if you don't already have one. Add some guys you like, and just comment them: "Hey! What's up?" Who knows what might happen from there?

i thnk i walked around school all day with a blood stain on the back of my shorts. that is just so embarasing and then my friend just came to see me and i walked away and he was in the car, i know he deff saw that tho. like its overwhelming, what do i do to get over the embarasmenttt? (link)
|
It's happened to me before... more than once. :(
I was wearing white pants once.
Don't worry--you'll soon forget. It's only questions like these that bring up those dreaded memories.
No, really, I think that the majority of girls have had the same thing happen to them.
No one will remember anyways. :)

Hey, im a freshman in high school and i had a question.
Basically, i need to start stepping out of the box. I need to open up and start talking to boys in my school. I do talk to guys, but only when they talk to me. I need to go up to them and start a conversation but i am too shy like that. I mean, i can continue a conversation once the guy puts forth the effort, but i can never start one with someone random, im way too shy. Like, my friends can start conversation with randomm guys and be so confident about it, but i cant do that! I think im pretty and i used to be so confident, but i dont know what happened. Any adivce?? I do flirt, LOL...but im way to shy to flirt with a random hot guy, because im scared of being rejected. Im sure that is what it is. My friend can go up to any guy and just start anything, while i just stand beside her and smile. Any advice please?! Im really going to try hard this week to be noticed! Thanks soo much! (link)
|
Hey... I'm not so sure I can answer your question because that is pretty much how I am as well.
My friends can do the same thing: talk to guys very easily, flirt with them, and if they like a guy, they'll have a boyfriend within a few weeks. Me, I just think, "He's so cute...I like him so much...and maybe he likes me" and I'll tell my friends I like him, and they'll ask, "Want me to talk to him for you?" and I'd say, "Noooooo!" because I'm terribly scared of rejection and that he'll be like, "Yuck, no." Although likely, that wouldn't happen.
With all that said, here's what you should do lol.
Make eye contact, not a 5-minute stare though. Just a few times, for a few seconds.
If he says a joke, laugh.
If he's in your class, ask him about hw, about tests, various little things such as that.
Then after you are pretty familiar with him, you can start teasing him.
That kind of subtle thing, since your personality seems to be more subtle.
And if your friends start a conversation with a random guy, freely join in. :)
Hope I was sorta helpful.

im sick of it everybody calls me ugly heres a pciture of me
i makes me sad and all depressed i got called ugly alot but not at school or anything but still and i i think im ugly and i h ate it it makes me depressed and im sick of this crap and i cat even get a bf and when i do there rude
and like people think im pretty but i get called ugly to (link)
|
I am sure you are pretty. Others say you are, and why would they lie to you? Believe it.
Even if you aren't, that doesn't matter: it really is inside that counts. And all those people who tell you you're ugly, they can shove it. They are very rude, and that is definitely an ugly thing to be.
As long as you are confident of yourself, and you show it: walking straight and tall, slow paced, and just acting like you really do like yourself, others will see that in you. You have to be nice to others as well.
You also have to be strong and just stand up for what you are. Don't change and do things just so others will like you. Change and do things so you will like yourself.
I can tell that you don't have much self confidence.
Make an effort so that you will feel like you are pretty. Perhaps pluck your eyebrows, wear a touch of makeup, wear cute clothes, style your hair, maybe put on earrings or a necklace, get contacts if you have glasses, get acne medicine if you have a few pimples-- little things like that. Soon you'll really think you are pretty.
I know how it feels to think you're ugly. Lots of people tell me I'm very pretty, etc, etc... and many times I don't believe them. However, when I make a small effort to pull myself together, you know what? I think: "I look good", and then I have confidence in myself.
I don't have a boyfriend either, but you know what? I don't need one, and I'm sure that I can get one if I really wanted one.
That's how you should think.
Whoever you are, and whatever you look like, I can guarantee that somewhere out there, there is at least one person who has a crush on you or who is like, "Wow, I like her.:
It's not that you can't get a boyfriend-- it's that people can't get you.
You just have to wait. Don't go out with just anyone, however. You're better than that.
Only go out with someone if you really, truly like him and he is good to you.
Hope I helped you.

Well I was really sad this year so i started writing in diaries and ever since then, any work that needs to be written, I wrote them as how i would talk.
I'm in highschool and now it's a big problem. i used to get like A's but now in highschool the teacher said i need to make it sound like professional. The spelling, grammer and everything is all perfect but the way i write it, it sound slike i'm talking.
What can i do? I'm not used to writing professional format anymore (link)
|
Hi.
You can send me an essay you wrote that your teacher considers to be unprofessional, and I will correct it and show you why.
|
Ok my teacher is constantly picking on me because my voice is so quiet.
Like she won't talk to me and everytime i try to ask her for help she'll shout SORRY WHAT WAS THAT and I'll try to say it louder and she'll constantly interupt me so i'll say "nevermind.."
She's the one in the beginning of the year going "don't think that teachers hate you or are trying to fail you because they get much more work if you do fail" But at this rate i'd prob fail because I'm not getting any help and I have no idea what to do.
And my voice is super quiet so i probably can tlak louder but the louder I talk, the more unclear so it will sound fairly similar to a nail meeting wood.
What can i do? ask for a different teacher? (link)
|
Wow, I know exactly what you mean. That teacher is ridiculous.
My 4th grade teacher did something similar to me, because I was quiet-- she told me I had to SCREAM something, multiple times. So I did.
And this was in front of my entire class.
Bad memories. I hope I never see her again.
But anyways...you should tell your teacher privately that this is uncalled for (well, not in those exact terms), or tell your parents to talk to an administrator.
Jack is right-- it's not your problem: SHE's the problem.
This was less advice, and more empathizing with you.
I'm sorry your teacher is a jerk.

thank you so much! i would very much like to take the class. i will force my younger sibling to do it.
about this:
"Today we were given sample essays from other students from past years and told to grade them (essays are on a scale of 1-9, 9 being the highest)."
i was wondering if i could somehow have a scanned copy of that to try and grade it on my own to see if i can recognize good writing? (link)
|
Sorry, we did it in class... multiple essays by different students for the same prompt.

Okay so I am taking my ACT in October I guess..What should I be expecting? Is it as nervewrecking as it seems? How can I prepare because I am not taking ACT Prep this year..Uhmm..What exactly would be a good score for college and scholorships? Is it a good idea to take both the ACT and the SAT? What is the difference? Please someone just help me with this topic..Anything will do...Thanks much :] (link)
|
I've only taken the ACT, so I wouldn't know about the SAT.
However, the most important thing when you go in and take the ACT is have CONFIDENCE. If you feel like, yes you can do it and ace it, you will. Don't stress out about it. I suggest when you take your test, bring plenty of sharp #2 pencils, fresh batteries for your graphing calculator (and know how to use it well), lay out your clothes the night before, eat a good breakfast, bring a jacket in case it is cold, and perhaps gum if you would like.
It was nerve-wracking when I first took it last year, but once I got started, I just focused on the test.
For preparation, you can get a ACT prep book and perhaps a study buddy. :) Try the full-length practice tests, see what you missed and find out why you missed it. If you don't understand, ask someone for help, such as a teacher.
A good score for the ACT is about 28. However, many people get around the 22 range (of 36). Anything in between is above the norm.
It is likely good to take both tests.
However, if you do very well on the ACT, there is no need to take the SAT, though you can.
More tips:
Science tends to be the section most students have difficulty with. The secret is: don't get bogged down reading the entire passage if the questions deal mainly with graphs and experiments.
Skim and get the gist of it. Then go straight to the question, and see what exactly you are looking for. Do that: skim, question, answer, question, answer. You need the bare minimum of science skills (which is definitely not my strong point) to ace this section. You need the ability to obtain information from graphs and the experiment tables. Very little science actually required.
Even if you feel very confident about everything, if you have time left over, CHECK YOUR WORK! Repeatedly. You could have made a simple mistake or just bubbled in the wrong answer.
Anyways, I hope this helps you.
GOOD LUCK! And tell me how it goes. :)

ap lang or ap lit
hi! so do you take ap lang or ap lit?
thanks for replying.. i have some questions..
1) does/did it help your essay writing at all?
2) what do you guys do exactly in class? only write essays? read books/essays/short stories, learn grammar..etc
3) does your teacher give you sample essays/writings from other students (name withheld, of course) to see as examples of what to do or what not to do?
(link)

I'm taking AP Language right now.
I'm only in the first month or so of class, but I think it's helping my writing a lot. I don't know; maybe it's because of the expectations I have of my teacher's standards. Here's what we have done so far:
Our first essay was a personal experience essay (this was fun) concerning anything we wanted, focusing primarily on selection of detail.
We read "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" (a short book) and wrote 2 essays concerning it. For the first essay, we used the book for examples. For the second essay, we were given a prompt: "There can be no freedom without education" and told to agree, challenge, or qualify it (both agree and disagree) using the book and other specific exmaples.
In class, we did not really go over the book plot. We did discuss literary elements of the book.
We were assigned a new book, "Angela's Ashes" and will have to write 2 research papers on it.
We have been given various short essays (1-2 pages) and taught to annotate them. This means really focusing on the smallest of details and commenting on them, asking questions, noting specific imagery, itc. This helps the writing of essays.
Learned about Parallel Structure
Selection of detail
Diction (to analyze the effect of chosen words)
New vocabulary
Punctuation (Commas and Apostrophes)
We also learned to imitate syntax.
I don't know about you, but this sounded really difficult to me when my brother took the same class last year.
However, this year, as we've been being taught everything, it has not been too hard.
Today we were given sample essays from other students from past years and told to grade them (essays are on a scale of 1-9, 9 being the highest). This is so we would know what is appropriate for an essay.
My brother told me that last year, when some essays were assigned, the teacher would grade them first, then have students (from the other AP Language class) grade them (those grades would not really count).
Anyways, if you asked this question because you are considering taking AP Language or AP Literature, I suggest you go for it.
My essay writing dramatically improved, or at least I think it did.
Hope this helps. :)

is anyone taking ap lit or ap lang in high school? if so please reply yes if its okay if i drop a question in your inbox thanks in advance (link)

Does English I count?
Jk, I'm taking Ap Lang. Sorry my answer is like 3 days late, but I just saw your question.

well, I'm 15/f and I have braces (on my teeth :p). I never had a bf. Is that why? are braces a turn off for guys? (link)
|
Hi. I don't know if it's a turn-off for guys, but I know a few guys who have braces and I hardly notice it at all. I don't ever think about their braces, although (subconsciously, I guess, lol) I know they have them.
So... I don't think it makes a difference whatsoever.
|
So, I just learned the ABC's backwards and I'm really into stuff like that. Does anyone have anything entertaining/impressive that I can learn that is similar to this skill? I don't want to learn anything else backwards, though. (link)

Writing upside down...
If you're right handed, writing with your left hand. If you're left handed, writing with you right hand.
That's the kind of stuff I try to do.
Hope I helped. :)

i'm really really bored with all the books i have read. i'm ready for a new good one. i don't like to read books that are about life, but more like one's that tell a story. i would like to start a new series. i like the harry potter books and sisterhood of the traveling pants. i'm 15 and female. i am smart so nothing that's really easy to read but nothing that takes to much thinking either. any suggestions? (link)
|
The Princess Bride by William Goldman. It's not part of a series, but it's an awesome book. And really fun to read.
Also, I don't know if you would like this sort of thing, but "I, Claudius" by Robert Graves is a very detailed book about the Roman emperors. It sounds dull, but it's not. I just finished it a few days ago.
Hope I helped. :)
