Ignatz answered Friday November 2 2007, 12:39 pm: A whole album of this sort of thing is "Magic and Loss" by Lou Reed. He wrote the songs after losing two friends to cancer in a year. Very cathartic. If you don't know about Lou Reed, you should.
Another album: "The Wind" by Warren Zevon. He wrote and recorded this one as he was dying of lung cancer. The last track is a farewell letter to his wife.
"Alice", "Blood Money" and "The Black Rider" by Tom Waits are all gloomy and depressing albums.
These should do you fine, and keep you depressed for months.

Rascal Flatts - What Hurts The Most
Brad Paisley & Allison Krauss - Whiskey Lullaby
Rascal Flatts - It's Not Supposed to go Like That
I Will Remember You - Sarah McLachlan
Concrete Angel - Martina McBride
I'm Already There - Lonestar
Not A Day Goes By - Lonstar
Who You'd Be Today- Kenny Chesney
So Small - Carrie Underwood
Here Without you - 3 Doors Down
The Christmas Shoes - Newsong
I just went through my itunes and tried to pick some out. They're not all about death/breakups (I don't think anyway).
I would have a lot more "sad" songs but they're really more of a personal sad song because of people I know who loved them and were killed, etc. [ S_C's advice column | Ask S_C A Question ]
