high school

Question Posted Saturday August 4 2007, 8:10 am

hey

this september, i'm going to be going into high school. i have a few questions. - you don't have to answer all of them; even if you can answer one, i'd be greatly appreciative.

1.) what's the FASTEST way to learn the map of my school? - besides getting a map & memorizing it

2.) how do i not become nervous the first few weeks when i'm getting accustomed? [like when i get lost, etc.]

3.) any tips on how to survive at least freshman year?

thanks so much, kidss.

1.) Walk around some. If you get lost, that will be another turn you learned on your map. At my school we don't get them. And so we had to learn the school from nothing, but if the buildings/wings have letters or numbers on them it wouldn't be a problem to remember them.
2.) You're going to get nervous anyway. But it's not a big deal. Just make friends, and when you think you're getting lost, ask someone for help. Chances are you won't ever see them again if your schools big enough. Or ask a teacher. They're there to help.
3.) Make loads of friends and just have fun. youre new to the school and you've got time to learn things. Just go with everything and never pick fights.

Okay......

1. you just have to keep going around and around the school... eventually it will stick in your mind and you should have no problem getting around. I was a freshman last year in a new school and i got so lost on the first day, but there were guides around the school, and by the time the week was over, I knew where everything was and no trouble getting around, so it just takes time, you will know it soon after you start.

2. Well... let's face it, you ARE going to get nervous, you can't stop that...... everyone is nervous going into a new high school, I definitely was.... but, when your getting used to the school, you meet friends and they help a whole lot. When i met my friends, my nervousness completely went away. Also when you get lost, just ask someone where it is you need to go, except i don't recommend asking a senior lol they can be pretty harsh. but don't worry, just don't act stuck up to them, and they'll leave you alone

3. Whew... Freshman year isn't bad.... at all. I was a incoming freshman last year.. i knew nothing about the school, knenw NO people and i turned out fine. What gets you through the year is friends. I don't know what i would have done if i didn't have them around during school. Another thing, is don't try to act all high and mighty, especially in front of seniors.... they will seriousy mess you up..... at least at my school they did. Just play it cool, meet somme friends and you will be FINE. Last year, i recall myself writing on advicenators asking how it is to be a frshman, and how i could survive.... and people gave me answers like ' OH IT'S GONNA BE FINE!!' etc. and i didn't believe them... but seriously IT WAS FINE!!! believe me, you will be fine, it is SO not as bad as some people make it sound to be

:] hope I helped

I'd start off with just trying to figure out how to get to your classes. Ask your friends, or just figure out how to get to your first period class, then ask that teacher how to get to your next class. Ask the upperclassmen if you'd like-you can pretty much tell who would lie to you and who wouldn't. After you figure that out [which will take about a week, if that], you can figure out the rest of the school. You also might be able to go to the school a week or so before school starts, and just walk around. My school has signs, so I never really got lost. Maybe your school does too.

Just relax. It shouldn't be that nerve raking. It's not really that big of a deal. When you get lost, don't go crazy. Ask someone around you. Teachers are lenient if you're late for the first week or so.

Freshmen year is not bad at all. It's actually pretty fun. It's a new start, and you get to meet a ton of new people. Just make small talk with people sitting around you. I made a few of my good friends just from making small talk in my history class. Join a club or sport.

There's nothing to worry about. The upperclassmen aren't going to kill you or anything. You'll survive. :)

1) I would go to your high school and walk around the area with a friend. If you have portables or more than one building for classes. I think you get your schedule a week before school starts? That's what I had to do. I also got a map and memorized what halls I had to take to go to my classes.
On the first day, you could get there really early and walk around.

3) Freshmen year is okay. Don't slack off though. I did that and I'm behind in my class credits. Try your best. Everyone is supposedly friendly with others. You will make friends with the upperclassmen. You may have some classes with them too without knowing it. You will get homework from nearly every class [sometimes PE too]. If you need help, then make sure to get it. Make it a goal to pass all of your classes. Remember to have fun and to go to bed on time. Some teachers are mean about sleeping in class. I didn't do much my first year and I messed up. Just come prepared and do your work on time. Join some clubs and have fun.

HeartsLiesFriends answered Saturday August 4 2007, 4:03 pm:
1). If your school has freshman orientation, look around it. Usually [well at least in mine], they gave you your schedule that day, so after the orientation, you could look around. If yours doesn't do that, have your parent call the guidance councelors there [they are there a lot, but mostly in the earling morning] and ask if they can print your schedule out, and you and someone can pick it up early. The school will most likely be open, like for summer school and sports practices [ours start early here so idk about yours], but it will deffinately be open. Then you can look around the school and find your classes then. Where the different classes are in my school, there are different colored lockers. Maybe if yours is like that you could remember it to. Like english&language are with say blue. Math&technoloy are yellow. History&other languages are with green. And so on and so fourth. If you're going to lunch and you don't know where the cafeteria is, there will be a lot of people going to and just follow them.

2) You'll probably get accustomed really fast. if you get lost on the first day, dont panic or cry or anything. It's really not that bad, and if you ask a teacher or anyone, they will help you. People say don't ask students, but really, you can. Most of them aren't gonna be jerks and laugh at you cause' you're lost. They were freshman once too.

3) You'll survive. Freshman year is more tough that middle school though. In some classes, you get more homework. Missing work is more strict. Don't expect to turn your missing work in two months later, because a lot of teachers don't allow that. Make sure you're always prepared. Don't be late to class. Make sure you enjoy it. Don't be rude to your teachers. HAVE FUN. Talk to people you don't know, they are more than likely just as nervous as you are. I would recommend joining clubs, because thats where you meet a lot of people that you have something in common with. Plus it looks good for college. How to survive freshman year, is how you survived all your other years of school, but with more maturity. HS is a lot of fun. Plus the freedom is awesome.

1. Before school starts, get a map. Take it to your school and walk around, getting a general feel for the layout of the school and where things are. Then, once you get your schedule, do it again, taking several different routes to each of your classes and figuring out the shortest way. Once you find a way that works for you, walk it 10 times. No, I'm not kidding. I guarantee if you practice it you'll remember where to go.

2. Remember, people in high school are not here to make your life miserable. Take a deep breath, calm yourself down. It's okay to get lost, teachers will understand. If you see a teacher or administrator, ask them for help. (I don't recommend asking students). Memorize where the office and library are, and ask for help there. Your first week will not be the best week of your life but I promise it gets better.

3. Freshman year isn't really so bad. The classes aren't super-hard, and it's a great opportunity to try things and meet new people. Do everything you can, go to dances, social events, join clubs, sports, etc- do everything you want to try out and have fun!

1)Go to your school, and just memorize the first floor. Then the second floor. Or mark your classes on the map and try and look at it for a while. Then ditch your map and try and find your way around to your classes. Basically, you just need time to adjust. Also, try and find the quickest, most efficient way you can get to and from classes. Memorize different ways, too, just in case something happens to your normal route. It just takes some time. I've also learned the importance of looking at the map a whole freaking lot. Erm, look at the map, go around the school. While you look at the map, try and place what that part of the school looks like. But really, find more than one way to get to a class because you'll never know! Just try and go around the school as much as you can. Place what parts of the school looks like as you look at the map. Try and to and from classes to your locker to the cafetaria to the bus loop without your map if the school is accessible/

2)Oh my. I got lost when I went to the high school when I was in 8th grade for my Latin class [The schools are next to each other] Just remain calm, don't spaz, and ask a TEACHER as to how to get to your class. Keep a map with you until you've familiarized yourself with the school. And always keep a schedule with your teacher's name and room number with you. As for getting accustomed, it won't be much different from middle school. Just pretend like you're coming form elementary to middle school again. Your friends will be great comfort and even if you don't have any classes with them, you'll make new friends. Erm, if you have problems with nervousness, eat bananas. They're good beta blockers [they make you less nervous in other words].

3)Stay out of the bathrooms because you'll be caught for smoking. Keep clear of seniors because they'll dump you in the trash can. Avoid eye contact with the teachers or you'll get detention. Haha. JUST KIDDINNNGGG!!!

-Stay organized
-No attitude or cockiness
-Be yourself
-Act responsible and kind and what not to show off for teachers.
-Suck up to the principal of your school.
-Bring around quarters and dollars in your bag in case you need to make a phone call or you run out of lunch money or if that potato chip bag looks irresistible sitting in that vending machine.
-Keep your schedule w/ room numbers all the time
-Bring around a map until you're familiar with the school.
-Do not overload yourself with clubs
-Do all your homework and prepare ahead of time if possible.
-Stay organized. This is very important. Make a schedule if you need to. Organization is the key.
-Get enough rest!
-Have fun!

Freshman year is exciting because you get to start a new school. Don't worry about friends, making new friends, etc. It's easy and you'll have new friends in no time.

Everyone also says that upperclassmen [usually 11th and 12th graders] won't like freshies. I oppose that. A lot.

When I was a freshie last year, most of my friends were in 10th grade. I have 3 or 4 junior friends [all very nice] and I made friends with lots of seniors, though I regret it now that I'm going to miss that. Haha. But if they don't seem to like you, don't cling. Move on =)

Not in highschool yet but I think the best way to survive freshman ytear is to get some older friends. Don't be intimidated. As for learning the map of your school try breaking it down into learning different parts of the school and eventually you can put it all together. If you get lost don't panic some teachers are lenient for the first few weeks about tardiness. Have fun you'll make it!

Cux answered Saturday August 4 2007, 1:43 pm:
Hey. At least this is a variation of the typical high school questions.

1.) The fastest way to learn the map of the school is to actually go to the school- like at Freshmen Orientation [if your school has it] and just walk around and go in every hallway. Trust me- seeing it visually in front of you rather than having a piece of paper in front of you. Walk from your first class, to your second, to your third, etc. Then- go through it backwards- then forwards- then backwards, etc. until you know it "like the back of [your] hand".

2.) Trust me- if you don't carry a map around the first day- you won't be tagged as a freshman right away. Its usually apparent to the rest of us whether you are or not. =D Just relax and get to your classes the first few days. Once you get into the groove of it- you will be nothing but fine. You'll learn quickly what hallways/stairways to take to get to certain classes. If you freak out and get all nervous it won't help you at all.

3.)Well- first off- stay away from upperclassmen.
Here is a question I answered before that might help you with this third question:

[[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) ]-->

I was a freshman last year- and I have to say.. it was one of the most scary things I've EVER experienced! I was thrown in the trash can on the first day and it was horrible. Some kid even had to go to the emergency room! It was the WORST first day of school of my entire life! I almost didn't go back!

Haha- so hopefully you didn't take that seriously- because it really wasn't like that at all. I always play that trick on people who ask this question. C'mon- I gotta have a little fun! High school is NOT scary. It actually is a lot more fun. You have more freedoms than middle school and you can take REALLY awesome classes. If you have to chance to take a Speech class- DO IT! You think it will be the dumbest class ever and you'll be really bored- but you get the chance to get really good at speeches- and you'll learn really awesome things! When you get to be a Junior/Senior- take AP and Honors classes- these will impress colleges and they will want you to go to their college if you do well enough on them.

People may tell you that Freshmen year doesn't count for anything- so slacking off won't matter until you're an upperclassmen. This is wrong. Colleges will look at your cumulative GPA- and that includes your freshmen year. Don't slack off; you'll regret it later.

Just to debunk the rumor- There is NOT a "Freshmen Friday". Sure, this used to exist back in the 60s and 70s, but it doesn't anymore. Any school that actually still does it will probably end up getting sued by a bunch of parents. So most don't do it. Chances are, your high school won't do it.

Here is my list of DOs and DON'Ts:

Do:
-Do all of your homework.
-Make new friends [some old ones will naturally just fade away] and do this by just starting up simple conversations with people- and it will eventually lead to a great friendship. Ask someone you may want to get to know for a pencil in class.. that's a classic. Sit with new people at lunch.
-Ask the teacher for help if you need it.

Don't:
-Don't talk to seniors.. they most likely DON'T like you. The won't give you any respect.
-Don't wear revealing clothing- seniors will automatically hate you.

All in all- if you just be yourself- you'll be fine. If you have upperclassmen in any classes- you'll get to know them over the course of the year- and you may end up meeting some really great people. I know that some of my best friends I met at school last year- and most of them were 10th grade or older. Not all seniors hate you- some will be welcoming- but just assume the worst in them, at first. After awhile- you'll know who to avoid and who to warm up to. You'll be fine. Don't worry.
