I never drank before yesterday but my friend had a bottle of gordans london dry gin and i took i big mouthful and swallowed it at once. I felt really sick and was about to throw up. It tasted like wood and my throat was all tensed up. I looked on the back of the bottle and it said 40% vol something. Am I allergic to alcohol or is gordans gin just strong? I did not throw up in the end. 13/m

Second of all, everyone has differet reactions to alcohol. My dad can drink up to like 5 bottles of alcohol before he gets drunk. But my mom can't drink a sip or she'll be sick for weeks. My friend, who is also underaged, can drink like there's no tomorrow and he won't get drunk much.

It's cheap too so it's not a great feeling...you're not allergic, you're just inexperienced. you're 13, don't start getting into that stuff yet. <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
soljette answered Wednesday June 20 2007, 6:42 pm: I think it all depends on the person. Me, personally, I hate vodka. It doesn't go down right with me. When I first started drinking, all I drank was Bacardi vodka. Not pretty. It made me throw up almost half the time. On the other hand I can drink Hennessey, whiskey, tequila like its nothing. Brown liquor does my body good :) Your body may not be able to take vodka. **Also, it may be the fact that Gordon is cheap. Cheap liquor tastes like ass. If you want to try some good vodka, go with Grey Goose. It goes down much much smoother. [ soljette's advice column | Ask soljette A Question ]
nonamecat answered Wednesday June 20 2007, 5:31 pm: The 40% meant that it is 40% alcohol by volume, meaning the other 60% is mostly water. While it's not the weakest alcoholic beverage, it is not strong either. Sometimes it may say 80 proof in addition to the 40% alcohol by volume. The proof is twice the percentage of the alcohol content (40% x 2= 80 proof). Pure alcohol is 200 proof. It is possible that you have an allergy, though it wouldn't be specific to alcohol, it would be to brewer's yeast. But, it is more likely that you just were not prepared for the taste and effect of the alcohol. Best to wait until your body is fully developed and you are more prepared for the consequences of drinking alcoholic beverages. [ nonamecat's advice column | Ask nonamecat A Question ]
clouded_bluee answered Wednesday June 20 2007, 5:23 pm: Any hard alcohol, such as gin, whisky, vodka, etc. Causes your throat to get tense or hurt. This will also make you feel sick, or like you are going to throw up. You're probably not allergic. You sould have started out with a less amount, or a different type of alcohol, like beer. You could have also used a chaser with the gin - a chaser is a drink, such as any type of pop, or juice that you mix with the drink, or drink right after you take the shot of alcohol- this makes it a lot better to handle. Hope I helped! Oh yeah and all hard alcohol tastes terrible, I think. [ clouded_bluee's advice column | Ask clouded_bluee A Question ]
