isis answered Sunday June 17 2007, 6:03 pm: A hamster is a rodent and their teeth never stop growing, so they need to gnaw on hard things to wear their teeth down. She needs things to chew in her cage so that she can do this. Apple wood is good, however if you get this from a tree yourself, you would need to ensure there are no parasites or chemicals in the wood. Alternatively, you can get everything she needs from a pet shop.
She will also need a lot of things to play with, as hamsters tend to be quite active. If you can get hamster tubing from the pet shop, she will spend hours running around it and storing her food in parts of it. You could keep changing the shape of the tubing which will make it more interesting for her and fun for you to watch.
Another thing you can do to keep her occupied is to hide her food in different areas of her cage so that she has to sniff it out. This is what she would have to do in the wild, so it would be instinctive for her to do this.
You do need to do everything you can to stop her gnawing the metal bars as she could damage her teeth, pulling them out of alignment. Hopefully, all of this should help to occupy her enough so that she forgets the bars. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
XkittyOkatX answered Sunday June 17 2007, 6:02 pm: Aw, my hamster used to do this, so I feel your pain.
What I did was just give her little tubes, like the ones that come in the middle of toilet paper rolls. These are less noisy, and they can create nice little beddings for themselves. :) [ XkittyOkatX's advice column | Ask XkittyOkatX A Question ]

dancedance42 answered Monday June 11 2007, 8:56 pm: You can put in toys for her to play with like tissues, paper towel tubes, or something you could buy at a pet store. Also, with my hamster, i used to feed him raisin bran through the bars and he loved it.
Hope i helped.
