anorexia..

Question Posted Tuesday April 17 2007, 6:25 am

okay, I just read this article on anorexia, and now I'm worried I'm going anorexic!! I'm 5"9 and a half and 152 pounds, and I used to eat a lot but lately I've been cutting back so I can lose weight (I walk an hour every day).

I've cut my portions back by about half and instead of eating A LOT of high calorie stuff as snacks/etc i eat healthy low calorie stuff..but now I'm really anal about what i put into my body and etc..and sometimes I'll feel really dizzy inbetween 8 am and 11 am because i eat at 6am and dont have lunch till 11.

I don't even LOOK anorexic, so its not like I'm getting harrassed for it or anything..I'm just worried Im in danger of becoming one because i HATE way-too-skinny people, IMO they look sick and diseased, and I would hate to become anorexic, because in most cases that's losing control (i heard it can be genetic too) and i hate to lose control =P

i only want to lose weight till my BMI hits 19-20 (atm it's 22.4 according to some website), which would be when I'm 135-140 pounds.

so..am i in danger of becoming anorexic?

No. you don't seem at risk for anorexia.
What you should do is instead of eating three meals a day, try inserting little snacks (apples, or celery and peanutbutter, some kind of fruit/veggie snack with or without a dip (ranch dressing, peanutbutter,honey...) and/or a juice (apple,orange,cranberry...)or even iced tea) between meals. like you said that you get dizzy around 8. If you're in class, ask your teacher if they mind if you eat. and if you explain that you get dizzy due to smaller breakfasts they should understand. If not than go to your doctor or a dietitian and have them write you a note.

On a side note about the dizziness, I had that happen to me, and what it turned out to be was a lack of iron. so if you try to increase that via vitamins, it could help you some.

but back to my point. having small meals more often gives your body a chance to digest everything you eat and convert it to energy as you need it soon rather than saving some as fat.

hey no i dont think you turning anorexic. It can turn into that but i dont think you would. But i think the reason why your dizzy is because right now your body isnt used to the new ways your eating so its going to take awhile for your body to get used to that. So i wouldnt worry bout that really and it could be because your not eating as much now. But i dont think you wil become anorexic if you were you wouldnt be eating at all. Just because your cutting bak on how much you eat doenst mean that your goin to stop eating. IT happens to soem ppl but im sure you dont want to do that and i hope you dont thats just bad for you. I would just make sure your eating each day and keeping your diet going. ok well good luck with your diet and everythin if you need anymore help im here so you can write in my inbox! ok i hope i helped!?!? if i didnt im sorry :]

No, i'd say your not anorexic, i mean i guess it could turn into that but it seems like you wouldn't do that. Being anorexic would mean your eating pretty much nothing. If you look at the heathy portion sizes there really not that big. SO since you may have been eating A LOT of food before, it may seems like your barly eating enough, but i'm sure you are.

No. You're probably not anorexic. Anorexia is about more than restricting food. A lot of them have distorted body image, meaning that they look at their emaciated bodies and see huge fat bulges and terrible flaws. They are perfectionists in just about everything. They have a tendency to overwork themselves either with schoolwork, jobs, exercise, or all. I can see you're also a perfectionist, but you are not anorexic. It's great that you know where your BMI is now and you know what you want it to be. I would suggest, though, that you keep it 19 or above. 18 is underweight.

I had a roommate who was anorexic. She would restrict her daily calories to 200-300. She rode her bike everywhere. She worked 3 jobs while going to school. She was about 5' nothing, but she shopped in the children's department because she could not find any clothes in the adult section to fit her. She was hospitalized several times because she was on the brink of starvation. I don't think you're even headed in this direction as long as you have reasonable portions of healthy food.

Best wishes,

Sabine

your BMI is perfectly fine.. your normal, not overweight, or underweight. i dont see why you want to weigh less so much. i mean your already healthy, you dont have to be so close to being underweight to be pretty, or whatever you are trying to achieve by being just over underweight. but i dont think your diet is very safe.. it may be a start at becoming anorexia, which you do not want.

since you want to lose weight, look for healthier ways to do this. trust me, CUTTING BACK ON FOODS ONLY IS NOT VERY HEALTHY. you dont even have to really look at calorie labels and blah. in my opinion they take the joy out of food, unless you are going to the store to buy groceries. then check how many calories they are, but dont fret if they are a little above than what you want, if they are healthy. look at the food pyramid and be sure to eat based on it. eat alot of small portions, meaning that like eat maybe like a little bowl full of cereal (not TOO little, but not big either.) and then 2-3 hours later, your body will have used up all that energy from the cereal, unlike which would happen if you had a large bowl, and the body didnt need all that energy, giving you more fat. by then you'll have another little meal, too. do this like.. all day from when you wake up, but don't eat right before you go to bed, because your body does nothing with that energy, and you'll pack the pounds overnight.

in addition to eating well, be sure to excercise. i dont know what sports you like.. even if its like ultimate frisbee, lol. it doesnt matter. or you can just take to running around the neighborhood once every day. but give yourself a break day. even great athletes do that, because if you keep excercising, your body could break down because it hasnt rested. rest for 1-2 days, depending on if you feel kinda weak. ok and besides running, you can also do aerobics, and like push ups, sit ups, etc. they'll tone your body and you'll shed of a couple other pounds.

dont look at this as a "diet". think of it as a lifestyle change. dont just stop when you hit your goal BMI of 19-20. you may not even get there but who cares. great looking people dont have to weigh so little. you'll have a great body, and remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so you may lose and gain pounds at the same time, but its GOOD FOR YOU! also, if you stop excercising and eating right after you hit your goal, and return to your regular lifestyle, you'll just start gaining unecesary pounds again.

good luck with this. also, you said you were dizzy? make sure that when your excercising you have a good amount of energy (as in, your not tired.) and your not starving but not full (try not to eat until you get full.. eat till your satisfied.. thats another reason people gain pounds, from the extra food your body doesnt need. also, if you run on a full stomach you get cramps! haha same with swimming.), and carry a bottle of water with you.

Lastly, you can have a treat once in a while.. maybe like once or twice a month, eat a little of the high calorie stuff you like. and if you still go trick o treating on halloween, assuming you have 365-366 pieces of candy, make like an advent calendar, where like you eat one little piece of candy a day. if you block out these sweets all the time, you'll crave them even more when you see them, and may not be able to control yourself from not eating them. just dont over induldge.. like and dont eat too many in one day. drink lots of water in a day, too. not too much however, because too much water isnt healthy.. i forget how but my mom told me because shes a nurse and knows that stuff. soda isnt very good for you.. i dont know about you, but it gives me pimples so i just drink juice. juice is sweeter, and has good vitamins in it too. i mean soda has tons of calories too.. maybe good once in a while at parties, if you like it so much.

ok this is the last thing i'll say, haha. if you crave some food for no reason, when you know that you like just ate something else or something, chew on some ice. my mom does that, and she seems to be losing pounds, and getting thinner (she was kinda fat before, since she like just had a baby) too. dont chew on ice all the time, just for little cravings you dont really need. um, and try not to eat out so much. there was this thing on TV about alot of restaurants hiding their calorie thingies, and their foods had as much as 1,200 calories in 1 thing. yeah you dont really need that much. learn to cook if you dont already know, and maybe subscribe to those like cooking magazines with ideas for cool new great tasting foods that arent overflowing with cals.

I wouldn't think so to be honest. Thing is when you change your diet so drasticly it will take your body time to adjust (as it did with me too) to your new diet and the low cal intake.

If you do feel dizzy in the mornings though I would suggest a really high fibre breakfast that will quench your hunger until lunch time. My diet has pretty much been the exact same as yours.

Fruit is a great help when it comes to diets. Fruit is very, very healthy with almost no fat and fruit (some of it anyway) tastes gooood. I usually keep a lot of fruit around me so when I feel hungry or feel I need a snack I eat an apple, a banana or anything else I might have lying around that's fruit. If you feel like wanting chocolate then try grapes, you get the sweetness you want without the evil fat.

The only thing to remember is to keep eating. The real problem occurs when you stop eating because that causes more damage to your body than good. As long as you eat healthy (in conjunction with the walking you do every day) you should be at the weight you want to be in no time. Just don't try to keep cutting down on portions and such to try and speed the process up. It WILL take some time so you just have to be patient. :)

If you are worried further down the line about your eating habits or that you may have an eating disorder developing or if you keep getting these dizzy spells then a visit to your doctor would be in order. This will just be to let him/her know you have gone on this diet (explain it to them) and if that can be causing the dizzy spells. They will be in a better positin to advise you further and also ensure that you are getting the amount of vitamins and energy your body needs each day.

Good luck on hitting your target weight. :]
