What do the lyrics mean?

Question Posted Tuesday April 10 2007, 10:35 pm

The lyrics to How To Save a Life are this:
Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
<a href="[Link](Mouse over link to see full location);
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Those are the lyrics to the song. What is the song trying to say? Why does he want to know how to save a life? Thanks in advance.

its between a couple that are having a confrontation at one of their houses,at first she tells her guy to sit down and theyre just gonna have a talk then it starts getting stressing and they start blaming eachother for some mistake that happened then "you begin to wonder why you came" this person thinks that the whole confrontation was pointless and that they shouldnt have came in the first place. And they start to think and wonder what they did or said wrong which made them lose eachother.Theyre losing eachother because the guy changed like it says here "He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same"

The song How to Save a Life was influenced by my experience working as a mentor at a camp for troubled teens. One of the kids I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him. He killed himself over night, and I just wish I would have stayed up and talked to him about it. The song is about someone who lost their friend to suicide, and not knowing how to talk the person when they knew something was wrong, then later feeling regret. The person trying to help realizes they should have listened rather than think of what to say. My friend felt like everyone trying to help was saying, Change, or youre on your own, when all he wanted was someone to stay with him and walk through all his junk.

That's what the song was written about, it's from the lead singer.

omg the pastor talked about this in church last sunday. okay well in the first paragraph you listed is what we focused on and he said that it is about two people knowing that they need to talk about something but they are avoiding eachother to talk about it like it say "as he goes left and you stay right" is like you are avoiding the person. but mainly it is about two people who avoided to talk about or do something so he lost someone near and dear to him. and that is about all i know, i hope i helped!

i think it means that a boy and girl were going out but they kept on fighting and the guy still liked the girl but the girl lost interest. they used to be a great couple but the magic was lost.
the person who is singing is probably just a friend of the couple and he could have helped them stay together but he just stayed away so the life he was tryiong to save was there relationship.
i hope i helped!
