Brandi_S answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 6:10 pm: Just FYI- There are a lot of spanish speaking people in the United States; however, the spanish you learn in school isn't the same spanish spoken by Mexican Americans, or in Mexico for that matter.
My brother's brother-in-law is Hispanic, and flunked spanish class, even though he was raised to speak spanish by his parents. Why? Because it is a different form of the language than what he knew.
I don't know which you should choose, because I would assume spending 3 years learning any foreign language would look good on a college resume. Take the class for the one you would rather learn. [ Brandi_S's advice column | Ask Brandi_S A Question ]
dannisaysso answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:55 pm: well just like everyone else said, Spanish is definitly the way to go. being a 10th grader myself, i totally regret taking french because it is very difficult and i now know that spanish is the second most spoken language in the united states after english. If you are planning on getting a career in the U.S. i would definitly go with Spanish. [ dannisaysso's advice column | Ask dannisaysso A Question ]
AskAndy answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:49 pm: I say French, but you must do well in this class for it to look well. Everybody I know who takes a language says Spanish is way easier than French, and all the people taking Spanish are passing to honors and gt classes while most of the people taking French are only in regular and honors placement. From what I know French is the harder language, so if you want something impressive take that. Spanish though, in the usa, is more usefull to you in everyday life, but collegewise, french all the way [ AskAndy's advice column | Ask AskAndy A Question ]
Sabine answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:46 pm: Depending on the part of the country you're in and what your future goals are, choose the most practical. Here in Texas, I'd say that Spanish is a much better choice because it leads to higher employability. If you are near Quebec, or want to join the World Health Organization, however, you may want to study French. One tip is that it didn't work well for me to study both at the same time. Elle is French for 'her' and El is Spanish for 'him.' It was confusing.
abstract_profanity answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:44 pm: Truthfully, I don't think they look at one language being better than the other. As long as you took a second language ( any ) that's impressive enough. Which language interests you more? Maybe you want to consider searching each language and country first and then decide. There are pros and cons to everything. I took spanish and aboslutely loved it, I would recommend taking it if you're interested in Spanish and the culture of it. Daimeera answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:44 pm: If you live in Canada or plan to go to a Canadian university, French is probably the way to go. Otherwise, you're likely better off with Spanish.
But if you have even a slight preference, choose that one. It'll be a lot easier to stick it out.
Besides, universities generally don't look that closely at your specific classes, just that you've graduated and taken a second language, maths, sciences, etc. If it's not specific to your planned career, there's not a huge reason to pursue one over the other. leLovely answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:33 pm: You're probably better off taking Spanish. In a lot of places, a lot of people only speak Spanish. Colleges look for that because jobs often interact with people that only know how to speak Spanish. I take German, and I regret it. It's my fourth year & I know that I'm probably not gonna use it anytime soon. I wish I took Spanish because I know that it'll come in more handy. If you take French, I guess it'd come in handy if you go to Canada or France, but in Cananda most people speak English anyway. But yea, Spanish will probably come in handy in the future more than French or other languages would. <3 [ leLovely's advice column | Ask leLovely A Question ]
XSugarPieX77 answered Tuesday February 13 2007, 5:29 pm: I suggest Spanish. People are more likely to go to a spanish speaking country, because it is much closer than a french speaking one. It is more helpful, in life in my opinion. Say you become a teacher, then you will most likely need to know a bit of spanish if there is a spanish speaking kid, or, any other type of job. Both would look fine for college, doesnt matter which one. Hope i helped!
