trying to find religion

Question Posted Monday February 5 2007, 9:29 pm

I was raised agnostic, which my family is. My dad was raised a conservative catholic, but now is totally against religion and so is my mom. I was always very distant from religion & actually disliked it. Now, being a senior in highschool I've suddenly become interested. How do I go about furthering this interest and finding information about it? My family already doesn't support this and I wouldn't even know what to do if I stepped inside a church.

well first of all you need to firgure out which way you think you believe the most there is so many religions but most of them you can look up my internet or by books i'm a christian and i believe in jesus and all that good stuff but you need to find what you believe in first by examining all the religions and find out which one seems to catch you the most if it's hinduiszm or is it's catholic it's your choice....good luck.

Hm.. Well being close with God is your own choice, not your parents.
I suggest going to a piscapleon or baptist church.
They're very laidback and if you find the right church it's a lot of fun.
Just try it out.

You don't necessarily have to go to a church to explore religion possibilities. When I was young, I was attempted to be raised as a Catholic. But then we stopped going to church, because to me, that's not what I consider religion. Religion can be a very open thing, like going to church with others to sing songs and read the bible together, or it can be a very personal and spiritual thing that you do alone, which is what it's like for me.

You are probably old enough to make your own decisions, and your parents have to accept that. My mom always told me that anytime I wanted to take up a religion again, I could. If your parents ask about it, tell them that you're old enough to make your own decisions in life, and that you're not necessarily committing yourself to a religion for the rest of your life, you're just browsing and learning more information because you're curious.

Like I said, you don't have to go to a church to learn about religion. There are many websites and books that might be able to help you. You can also talk to different people that you know and ask them about their religion. (I suppose asking people on here about it, counts too!) But the most important thing is, what do YOU want in a religion? Do you want to make a committment to it, by going to a church every week? Do you want a strict religion that gives you order and a specific plan to follow in your life? Or do you want a more laid back religion that fits into your schedule?

The important thing is, that it's up to you and your values. Research many religions, but if there's alot of things in a religion that don't fit with you or your values, then it's not right for you. Most religions can be modified, as in, you don't have to go to church every week, and you don't have to do a 3 hour long prayer every night, so that you will still have time for yourself. I guess you could say that I am a sort of "Modified-Christian" agnostic. I'd like to be part Wiccan too. I've done witchcraft before, and I don't think it's "evil" at all, its just alot more deeply spiritual and self-based than other religions.

Of course, like others below me said, you can always go to a church for a mass. Everyone should be welcome in a church, but if you go to one, let yourself make the choice, not a priest.

Here's some sites with information on different religions:

There is a difference between finding religion and finding satisfaction for your soul. I'm guessing you have become interested because something inside of you seems empty, unfulfilled, like there's a hole that you want to fill. "Religion" will never fill it. Religion is repetition of do's and don'ts and forms the mindset of doing things like good deeds, praying while facing a certain direction, church rituals, and etc., will fill that emptiness. It won't. Only a relationship with the living God through His Son Jesus Christ will.

If you are seeking a relationship with God Almighty, I will be glad to tell you all about Jesus; just ask.

If you were to walk into a church and express that you were interested in learning more about that religion, I guarantee the priest and members of the church would welcome you with open arms. Why don't you try going to a mass and seeing what it's all about. Afterward, have a chat with the priest, if he's not to busy, and tell him what has been going on lately and that you want some information. If you're not ready for that step, try buying a bible and reading a bit. It's really interesting.

First, do you believe in Jesus? If so, jewish is out. Second, do you believe that one should confess their sins? If so, catholic is in. Catholics have a bunch of different things. They confess their sins to the priest (which I think is wrong, because no man should be allowed to forgive you except God) and they have weird ceremonies and stuff. I'm personally Baptist. Penticostal is another choice, but it's just basically hardcore Baptist. Methodist is nice too. My opinion: start off as Baptist, get a Bible, read up starting in the beginning, go to church, and you'll get the hang of it. If you go to a Baptist church (that's the only kind I've ever been to) then here is how it is: they have Sunday School for smaller children, where they learn small things, then everyone, parents & children & all go to the main room and first, everyone sings a few songs, then the preacher preaches, it's that simple. Also, you could try being "non-denominational." It's a religion, but it's a wider variation. It's mixed Baptist/Methodist/Etc.

Religion is a very interesting subject, I don't think any of them are correct, but it seems there's just a tiny bit of truth and wisdom in all of them. read:

Most religions fall into one of 3 categories:
-Dharmic, which is like Buddhism
-Abrahamic, which is like Christianity, and
-Pagan, like Wicca
If you know about the 3 religions I mentioned there, you'll have a good idea of what the others in it's category is like, and that will account for 99% of all religions.

To start, you need to figure out what you want to study up on. Study all of the religions if you so choose. From there, I would research online and at a library.

If you are interested in attending a certain church, go in sometime during the week and talk to the preacher. They will be MORE than happy to answer your questions and tell you anything you need to know. Don't worry about not knowing what to do when you step inside of a church. They want you to be there, and will do all that they can to teach you the ways of the church.

You don't need your family's support in this. They choose not to practice religion, but that is a choice they made for themselves. You have the right to choose for yourself.

i think the best thing to do would be to either research different religions online or talk to your friends about their religions. i don't really know what you're looking for or anything, but i think you should try to get some background info on whatever religion you may choose. you might want to invest in a bible if you want to lean that way. there are so many different forms of christianity and other religions that you can see which one best fits what you believe in. if you're a senior in high school and your family doesn't support this, then that doesn't really matter as much because in a year you will probably be in college and will be able to do whatever you want. i'd try wikipedia.org first... they will probably have a lot of history about different religions. don't let your friends that are very religious completely influence your decisions about your own religion, though. i hope i helped :)
