Both Anorexia and Bulimia are eating disorders. However, they're very different. Bulimia is when a person eats or binges on food, then purposely makes their selves vomit to lose the weight. Anorexia is when a person starves themselves and doesn't eat at all.

I just wanted to add that some anorexics are of the purging type--the starve themselves AND make themselves throw up. Usually this is when they eat what they consider to be a binge, which is often as small as a cookie.

Bulimia is not just throwing up. It includes any method to rid yourself of extra calories--vomiting, laxatives (which don't work), excessive exercise, fasting, etc. I wasn't aware of this until recently when my therapist and I discussed it, but yes, any method of purging at the specified frequency can count as bulimia.

There are strict conditions which must be met for the diagnosis of either disorder. If they're not met, but the individual still has a bad relationship with food, they're often diagnosed with ED-NOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified). The majority of the criteria for Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa is physical; for AN, you have to be 15% underweight, have lost your periods if you're female, along with several other physical conditions. For BN, there is a certain frequency at which you must be purging, and of course other criteria.

ED-NOS is no less serious than the other disorders, it's simply less understood. Many patients referred to as anorexic or bulimic are actually ED-NOS simply because they don't fulfill every piece of criteria.

You can find more about the criteria if you're interested by looking on something-fishy.org or googling "eating disorders" and "dsm-iv". I believe either of those should give you the results should you want them.

Hope that makes things a bit clearer. I know you wanted a few words, but I felt the need to elabourate on what was already said.

Anorexia is where you don't eat anything, because apparently you have self-esteem issues about your weight. Bulimia is when you binge and purge (eat, and then throw up your food).

Anorexia is when you starve yourself because you think that you are fat and try to lose weight, and bulimia is when you think your fat and try to lose weight but by eating a large amount of food and then making yourself throw up or use laxatives. Hope I helped

Anorexia is starving yourself when bullemia is making your self throw up or using laxatives to lose weight [ things that make you poop..]

Most bullemic people have Anorexia first. They are both deleterious eating disorders that need to be treated..

Anorexia is an eating disorder in which someone starves themself. Bulemia is when they will eat, but throw it up immediately to avoid gaining weight.

hay,
people get confused about this one a lot.
the difference is that people who suffer from bulimia are at a normal weight or slightly over weight where as people who suffer from anorexia are massively under weight, with women they have period problems.

theymos answered Tuesday January 30 2007, 11:48 pm:
anorexic people don't eat, bulimic people eat, but then make themselves throw up as soon as they can. Bulimic people have time to digest some of the food before they throw up, so they usually look less bony, but at the expense of their throat, mouth, teeth, and stomach.

note that the person below me is incorrect, anorexic people don't throw up at all, and it is a disease of the mind and not the body.
