LoveNJstyle answered Tuesday January 23 2007, 9:16 pm: No, I don't think it should be mandatory. I think that the students should be informed or even encouraged to participate in service activities but not forced... it takes away the meaning of helping out and making it a pain in the ass for everyone involved. <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
jeanine278972 answered Tuesday January 23 2007, 9:12 pm: Our high school requires freshmen and sophmores to do 2 hours (per year) and juniors and seniors to do 3 hours (per year) and since it was just started this year, you don't have to make up for previous years.
I do and don't like the idea. School isn't for learning to help out, its learning what you need to make it in life. It's good that they want us to help out in the community, but it shouldn't be required. The major problem i have with it : We can't sign out of our study hall and help out teachers for our "community service" I help out in the kindergarden classes daily and it doesn't count toward my service hours.
I think they should make it so if you do community service and have the other person sign for it, you should just be rewarded at graduation. Like with the cords they wear. Have a cord for the students who did the community service. More students would want to do it. Instead of feeling obligated, they could enjoy what they were doing and be doing it for the right reasons. [ jeanine278972's advice column | Ask jeanine278972 A Question ]

I do because the community is giving them the time, and education to be successful later on in life.
duudee_advicer answered Tuesday January 23 2007, 9:04 pm: No.
High school is for education, not
proper human morals. If we were
required to be better people in school,
then sure, community service would
be fine. Howevever, school is to
learn to count, subtract, and say
our ABC's. There is nothing about
picking up trash in there. I'm not
saying it would be a bad idea though,
dont get me wrong.
Orpheus answered Tuesday January 23 2007, 8:16 pm: No, I don't think community service should be a graduation requirement for high school students. While this isn't true of all high school students, some are active in everything from sports to music to student government (and have jobs), and expecting them to have time for community service just wouldn't work.
