Good Books.

Question Posted Tuesday January 23 2007, 12:59 am

I have a lot of time on my hands and am looking for some good books to read. I am not sure what to read though. I like books about teenagers going through tough times, kind of books that a teenage girl can relate to. I liked Crank and Speak. So anything kind of like either of those two books would be great. Thank you.

Daimeera answered Tuesday January 23 2007, 11:30 am:
I love "More Than You Can Chew" by Marnell Tokio. "Shoulder the Sky" by Lesley Choyce is fantastic (although perhaps hard to find if you don't live in Canada, specifically Nova Scotia). "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro is amazing. "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood is lovely, and a bit of a classic (especially if you're Canadian). "Gingerbread" (and subsequent titles) by Rachel Cohn is a pretty good read. "Lord of the Flies"--another classic, but it's definitely a classic for a reason.

You might want to check out Jodi Picoult, too. "Tenth Circle" and "The Pact" are probably my favourites by her, but many of her books pertain to youth ("My Sister's Keeper" is also good and definitely deals with adolescents).

And those are the ones that immediately come to my mind.

I liked NIGHT. It's about a boy & his experiences with living through the Holocaust. Speak was really good. Go Ask Alice is a really good book. I'm sure you'd like that one. To Kill A Mockingbird was alright. But my favorite book had to have been Keeping You A Secret. =)

"Tenderness" by Robert Cormier is good.
So is "Better Than Running at Night" by Hilary Frank.
"Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer if you're in the mood for teen vampires.
"Sirena" by Donna Jo Napoli for something from the Fantasy genre. It's my favorite book.

I, personally, am a Stephen King fan. Been a reader since the 6th grade. (Yah, younggrandma seemed to have gotten a call from the teacher on that...)

May not be your cup of tea, but just giving a suggestion.

Omgosh i love books like that too!
I love the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, its about an ugly chick haha. Ohh and another great book is Speak, i forgot who its by though, it's about a chick getting raped it's really good! Another one is Shattered glass, sorry i forgot who it's by again, but its about these popular guys trying to make the most unpopular guy popular. Ohh and another great book is Hanging On to max by Margaret Bechard, and that's about a teenager guy trying to keep onto his baby while trying to juggle with school and basketball and stuff. I got all these books at barnes and nobles, they have a huge selection of teenage books, it's so hard to choose from!

solidadvice4teens answered Tuesday January 23 2007, 1:35 am:
You might enjoy reading To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, The cather in the Rye J.D. Sallenger, Shoeless Joe by W.p. Kinsella (it's the book Field of Dreams is based upon), Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer both by Mark Twain.

While not designed for teens you might also like An Innocent Man by John Grisham. It's a story about a man wrongfully convicted of murder and how he wound up on death row. Don't worry what just said is only the tip of the iceburg with the non-fiction story.

If you are looking for books specifically for teens try Nancy McArthur and her series of novels in The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks series. There's several books in it that are about two brothers and two plants that eat well, you know...socks several times a day causing problems for the boys to hide them.
