i believe there was an alcohol ban in effect sometime in the 1920's. it didn't really work out though because people still made their own alcohols and sold them for a greater profit so it was removed shortly after.

The 18th amendment prohibited it; 21st amendment repealed the 18th amendment and allowed alcohol.

Prohibition was in the 1920's. During this time bootlegging was very common and the drinking level actually went up.

the prohibition era started in the late 1920's and ended mid 1930's
the goverment was dealing with a large organized crime problem in the country during this period due to bootlegging, selling of alcohol illegally.
the goverment was at the time trying to maintian a sence of order and morality in the country and felt that alcohol was a vile drink and banned its consumption by adding an amendment to the constitution.
