Not existing

Question Posted Monday December 4 2006, 5:44 pm

I've thought a lot about death lately, and have found myself very freaked out about what it would be like to not exist and that this is my only life. Dying and being nothing and not even knowing for forever scares me a lot.

Any advice or reassurance would be nice. Anything concerning Jesus will automatically get your question rated a 1 and your face ripped off.

So I know this is a belated response, but I came across your question in some one's column and thought I'd give it a shot.

All beliefs aside, I used to be afraid of death. I know how it is scary, because who REALLY knows what becomes of us after death? Maybe one goes to Heaven, or becomes another person, or becomes a blade of grass, or just blinks out. Maybe we become ghosts. Or, maybe we go on according to our own individual beliefs. Nobody knows for sure, and lets face it, we do fear the unknown.

I no longer fear death. It's bound to happen, we have no choice in the matter.

What we do have a choice on is how we live our lives before they are gone. To live life in the shadow of death isn't living at all.

Try not to focus on not existing someday, and focus on existing today. Focus on what you want to do before death to feel as though you have lived life to the fullest. (When my kids are grown, I want to go sky diving.)

You are here, and you are now. Worrying over your future demise only takes that away from you.

Happy living! :D

P.S. Off the subject? Don't listen to that crap from the person before me. There is nothing wrong with what you do or don't believe in.

Ahahaha. Don't worry, no Bible thumping from me... I'm an atheist ;)

The way I see it, what's so scary about nothing? We're born, we live, we procreate, we die, we get digested by micro-organisms and are returned to the earth. Nothing else.

I deal with it by living for this life. Because I don't believe in an afterlife, I focus on trying to life this life to the fullest.

The only way to achieve immortality is through memory. Try reaching out and touching someone else (emotionally!). The more peoples' lives you affect, the longer you'll live on in memory.

So instead of focusing on the nothingness after, focus on what you have here and now, and be thankful :)

Prepare my 1 please. Hmmm Rolling on your train of thought If you died and then you didnt exist whats there to be scared of? The second you die its blank. You wont feel anything, you wont know anything, you wont think anything, you wont be anything....You know, I used to be just like you. I thought when I die I will be nothing. Right. Well Just recently the Lord (Jesus) came into my life. (Rip my face off please...im ready to go)..Now I know that when I die I will exist. I know you will exist. However there will be a distinct difference (as of right this moment) I will continue to live after death, and you will....for lack of a better phrase...burn in hell. REMEMBER that is right this very second. If you gave your life to Jesus, you will have life everlasting. You wont have to be afraid of death. I welcome it everyday because I KNOW I will be better off, when it happens. I think it is far more scary to think that when someone dies who does not believe in God they will spend forever burning, and being seperated from God. I thank God everyday I finally listened to Him and gave my life over. When youve been in eternity for 1,000,000,000,000 years, that will only be like half of a nano second compared to how long forever is. If you need help turning over to the Lord I will help you. There are lots of people to help you. I dont mean to sound like a jerk or anything, but I am tired of people making everything sound like a wonderland, when in reality eternity could be a very very horrible thing. (I talk of christians who dont talk about hell and say life will be just perfect. They should know life is tough and Hell is very real) I dont want to see you go there. Once you believe, the evidence that shows that God does exist is overwhelming! I say once you believe, because a non believer is so shut down, they dont care to see the facts. If I can turn away from my old life anyone can. I was pretty much one step away from worshipping the devil before the Lord helped me. So dont be so shut down, give it a try. I would rather be rubbed out of existance then go to Hell. Jesus is waiting for you with open arms, so why dont you go meet with him. Get a bible, if you dont have one I will send you one, just whatever it takes for you to see the truth. This goes for anyone out there who reads this and doesnt believe....

Your salvation is as important as eternity is long....

I mention Jesus because it is the truth. If I had posted a question about how I think Jesus could be a lie and stated answers from atheists, or non-believers are not welcome, you yourself would have probably have answered.

I simply offered an answer to over come your fear of not existing. Its your duty to take it or leave it, but its my duty to offer my answer.

If you want to talk more, Id be more than welcome to have a conversation.

Dying is a scary thing. Its weird that at any moment in our life we could be gone. To me thats more of a reason to live your life to the absolute fullest. That doenst mean doing drugs and having sex with every person possible. Stay safe but have as much fun as you can. Dont regret anything and dont focus on things in the past. Life is great so live it to the absolute fullest so that when you die you wont have anything to regret. To be honest i could care less about the rate i get on this advice. what is most important to me is that i give you the advice that will help you the most. Dying doesnt have to be a scary thing..and living can be better than it already is. Accepting Jesus into my life has changed my outlook on everything in my life. I realize you dont want to hear any of this but its change my life so incredibly i cant help it. Its the cure for death. and its nothing other than JEsus. I can live my life to its absolute fullest and it doesnt have to end there. There is something 83249020438 times better for me when my life is over. So my whole life is enjoying it..and then looking forward to the great things ahead. im sorry that i told you something you didnt want to hear but its the truth and i cant lie to you. Dying doesnt have to be a scary thing. I hope that whatever you decide to take in of this advice helps you and i hope that you dont have to be scared anymore. Live your life the best way you can. <3 gaby

Death is one of the scariest things to think about, because it is so uncertain. Nobody knows when it is going to happen to them, how, and what will come after.
The only thing you can do is try to make a name for yourself now. People can live through their legacies after their death. Just think of Michelangelo and Alexander the Great. These people stood out in their lifetimes, and for doing so will be remembered for hundreds of years. That is existing after death.

Death is.. the end... it's nothingness not like sleeping... no awareness, no dreams... it's the end.
A friend of mine attempted suicide, and was dead from blood loss for about 4 minutes. She told me that is how it felt... it felt like nothing.

I am also afraid of not knowing death

well nobody knows what is in the afterlife when your dead. but you shouldnt worry about that you should just worry about your life right now because since it is the only one you have you should just have fun and enjoy it.
