kind of a nerd

Question Posted Saturday November 25 2006, 5:42 pm

so, i'm kind of a nerd. I'm not a loser, i have friends and everything. It's just that i make school and working hard my top priority. I'm just naturally a fast thinker so it feels like i'm the only person who ever talks in class. So I have a couple problems

1. how can I continue to participate in class without people thinking i'm a know it all

2. What should i do when my friends are like "we can't study with you because you know all the answers!" or "It's not fair, you're so much smarter than me" when they say this is really bugs me cuz i am only smart because i work hard, so it IS fair!

thanks anyone who can help!

Okay, thats a toughy, but I have had the same problems before.
1. You can continue to participate in class, by not answering as many questions. You are right, not just because of the way it looks, but because other students need to try and answer questions. Just think, who are you trying to impress, the teacher doesnt care if you get this question right, as long as you still try in class, its fine to keep your mouth shut, and ask the questions rather than answer them. Also, if you have a small class, theother students may begin to depend on you to answer the questions rather than them trying to actually do it themselves. However, taking that into consideration, also remember that it doesnt matter what the other kids think in class, atleast you're passing. Thats better than not trying and depending on others for help. On that note;
2. That happens to me ALL the time and I get soooo annoyed, because things don't usually come to me, I have to work my butt off for them, and when people hate me for getting better grades, I just ignore it and think to myself, that I deserve that mark, I worked hard and it was worth it. If they say that they don't want to study with you, tell them they are idiots, they should study with someone who knows what shes doing, and offer to quiz them, because if you already know the answers then, you can benifit from it as well because its just pounding it into your head more. If they still don't want to study with you, tehy're just jerks, and you can go study alone. Which often works better anyway, because you don't get distracted because so-and-so's BF is on MSN!!
Anyways, know that you arent the only one who has this problem, and if you keep trying hard, and taking those things into consideration, hopefully life will be okay.
Lots of Love,
Angie91

1. Well don't change yourself just because you are worried about what others might think. If people are judging you just because you have a few questions in class, or have a comment, then they have their own insecurities. So this is mainly their problem... they need to learn to like people for who they are, and not for what they want them to be. So just be yourself, and there will be people who like you for who you are.
But if you are really feeling that insecure about this, then maybe just try not to talk out loud as much? Maybe that can help so that you won't feel like such a know it all. But just remember that there's nothing wrong with knowing what is being taught.

2. When your friends say this, then just tell them that its only because you work hard. Tell them that if they want to be smarter at school, then they should just try and pay more attention and work really hard. (This may sound kind of mean, you might want to reword it so it doesn't sound as obnoxious.) :) Tell them that you feel left out and that you would really like to do stuff with them, and that it is really bugging you that they are leaving you out and saying this to you. If you don't tell your friends, then they may never know how you really feel.

Hope i helped!
JaNe

You might rate this low but whatever, I'm willing to take the risk....

I think that being smart and a fast thinker isn't something which you should stop being. If you are gifted people should respect you for it not alienate themselves from you because of it.

in class, when a teacher is asking a question and a lot of other peoples hands are up putting yours up unless the question is directed to you wont show that you are smarter than others. However, when there is that really tough test that everyone gets B's and below on but you don't brag about it or tell anyone who doesn't asked because I could see how that could get a little 'know it all'. And for your second question, it's best to not study with dumb people if they are dumb because then you are more like teaching them then you guys are helping eachother get better. Try and form a study group which has people who are up to your abilities.

First, be yourself! lol. You shouldn't have to worry about being a "nerd"... You have friends too, so what is the problem? As long as you are happy and in a good life, it shouldn't matter. But anyways,
1. You don't have to answer every single question in class. You can get away with being more quiet...
2. This you can't really fix. lol. I have a friend that switched schools because she hated being labeled "smartest person" ALL the time. I agree with you, it is fair that you are smarter. So keep it up, and don't let their comments get to you. You have an advantage- being smart and hard working.
