bad grade

Question Posted Wednesday August 23 2006, 3:59 pm

My mom pushes me with grades. She made me study all day for 5 days for one test, and I got a 77. Now I'm grounded for 2 weeks and have to study even harder and longer. I have no social life during the week and rarely on weekends because my mom always makes me study. I'm just not that smart. My first language is Chinese, so school in America is difficult and my mom doesn't care. She hit me with the textbook once because I didn't take notes like she told me to. My friends and I agree that I'm doing the best I can, and adding even more days of non-stop studying won't help. What do I do?

You should ask your mother if you can get a private tutor or something to help you understand everything better and maybe even suggest to her you get someone to try and help you learn English a little better so school might not be so hard, and let her know all the studying is stressing you out and really not helping you concentrate it's actually making it worse. I have a friend who used to live in China, and her parents are very strict of her education, and her parents just like your mom needs to learn the standards in America are different and probably not as high and strict as they might be in China. I would suggest that for an hour before you go to bed, study. Because whenever you learn it at the end of the day and then go right to bed and sleep on it, you'll remember more of it, and I also study on the way to school so I can soak more of the information in and I study in homeroom too if I don't have any other homework. I also hurry to the classroom and read a little before the class bell rings. I hope I helped. <3

Oh, and also you show ask your mother if you can have a friend over to help you study, so then you guys can quiz eachother. Maybe even try turning it into a fun game and see who can answer the most questions right, so it's less stressful and more fun.

you are right you are doing the best you can and your mom is making you cram it. If you do like a hour of studying right before bed then sleep on it you willl remember more. I did that and I got an 85. Sleep helps any thing.

my first language is chinese too and i know exactly how you feel because my mom's like that too.

Aside from everything the advice columnist said before me, you should try finding a tutor or having a friend who knows the subject very well help you. And if you dont get things you learn in class, you should always ask your teacher. i'm sure he or she would be glad to explain it to you. Getting study books might help too or having a study group you can work with. Before tests, see if you and a group of friends could get together to have a study group so that your friends can help you study for your tests.

Dont stay that you're 'not that smart'; under all the pressure your mom is putting you through, it's hard to work very well. Being pressured so much wont help you and only make you feel more frustrated.

Your mom also needs to understand that life in america is different from China. You just dont hit your kids because they are disobedient or dont get good grades. The expectations in america are different too and your mom needs to know that. You're trying your best but she thinks you can do better. Also, your mom needs to understand that it's not all about school and getting good grades. Talk to her or have a teacher you're close to talk to her. Try to work out a study plan with her, like compromise or something. Offer that if she lets you go see a movie or something on the weekend, you'll study an extra hour or something. Dont let your mom control your life by forcing you to study 24/7. It's your life not hers and she needs to know that.

if you need any more advice, feel free to message me!

Talk to a counselor at school about getting a private tutor who could help you after school or on weekends. Good luck!!

Well, if it makes you feel better, I was born in South Korea and myy first language is Korean.

Is the language getting in the way or learning things or understanding the question?

You should ask your mom to see if she can get you a tutor or ask your counslor if there is anybody in your school or high school that is willing to help you understand subjects better for free.

Don't put yourself down and say that you're just not that smart. Know this: Study for only 20min, take a 10min break, then 20min studying again. Your brain can only store up to 20min of studying at one time. So if you study for 1hr straight, it will remember the first 20min and have no memory of the rest 40min.

Everyone learns different ways so you should try and figure out which ways you learn the best. Trying reading and saying out the notes. e.g. "Edgar Allen Poe was a poet and a writer" if you need to memorize that, read it and say it out loud. If that helps, you learn by listening. Write it down and if that helps, you learn by actually doing something with it (writing it out, doing the action, acting it out, etc) Or just read it, study it, and if that helps (usually not) you have a photographic memory (which is rare)

Remember to take breaks every 20min, turn off all music, tv noise. Be in a silent room with NO distractions and focus on your schoolwork. Oh, and eat a snack before you start studying so you won't have to stop to go eat when you get hungry.

And about your mom hitting you with a txb, that's called child abuse and she should watch that. And tell her that she's pushing you too hard. She probably wants you to get good grades and have a good future. Tell her this:
I know that I haven't done to well on tests and getting good grades but I need social time too instead of studying study and more studying. I know that you just want me to improve on my test grades (or whatever else) and you think that making me study 24/7 is going to help. But it isn't. I can't keep studying and expect it to all get stored in my brain without any fun. Can I set aside friend time or fun time so I can socialize or have fun at least three times a week?

Put it in your own words. See if any of that helps. Good luck =X
