My parents have been smoking since they were teenagers. I'm just curious if everyone who smokes has a really high risk of getting lung cancer? It's not common in my family and I'm worried that my parents will get it.
captainL answered Monday August 14 2006, 12:37 am: Absolutely. My parent's smoke as well. Anyone who smokes has a very high risk of lung cancer. Try asking them to switch to gum. It just might save their lives. And as for YOU - stay away from them when they smoke. Second-hand smoke can kill. :] [ captainL's advice column | Ask captainL A Question ]

Here are some websites for you than can give you true accurate information on lung cancer being linked to ciggarettes.
AskAndy answered Sunday August 13 2006, 2:32 pm: sorry they're smokers. depending on how old they are, i would say, they have a high risk of getting it. lung cancer cant run in a family, because if you smoke, you get lung cancer. if you hang around smokers, you can get lung cancer. if you stay away from tobbacco, you dont get it. you should really talk to them to help them quit. their risk will still be high but it wont be as bad [ AskAndy's advice column | Ask AskAndy A Question ]

XkittyOkatX answered Sunday August 13 2006, 12:31 pm: There's no real set risk for anyone, but unfourtunately , it would seem that they have a fairly high risk now.
All those years, obviously damaging their lungs, make them more and more at risk.
Talk to them about quitting, though I kow it's very hard (my parents don't want to).
Tell them you're very worried, and find some good groups to help them.
Also, maybe get them to try patches or something for a week.
Something that may work, would be if you got them to go a week without smoking, using a patch or something, and they can see how they're doing without cigerettes. [ XkittyOkatX's advice column | Ask XkittyOkatX A Question ]
IhAvEaNsWeRs2104 answered Sunday August 13 2006, 11:52 am: No not all people that smoke get lung cancer but yes everyone that smokes does have that high risk of getting it. Umm it not being common in your family makes it a bit of a lower chance that they will get it but that doesn't mean they won't. But don't worry not everyone gets it. Also it matters how often and what kind of cigaretts they smoke.
babiigirl answered Sunday August 13 2006, 3:32 am: theres a good chance that your parents may get lung cancer. But since your parents have been smoking since they were teenagers it would probly be really hard for them to quit.
I got this from the website that im going to give you.
---One other risk factor that researchers are looking at is a genetic predisposition to lung cancer. While we know that a family history of lung cancer is a factor in who gets lung cancer and who does not, “We have not identified the gene yet,” Dr. Martins says. “But obviously, some people smoke all their lives and don’t get lung cancer.”---

Smoking, particularly of cigarettes, is by far the main contributor to lung cancer, which at least in theory makes it one of the easiest diseases to prevent. In the United States, smoking is estimated to account for 87% of lung cancer cases (90% in men and 79% in women), and in the UK for 90%. Cigarette smoke contains 19 known carcinogens[2] including radioisotopes from the radon decay sequence, nitrosamine, and benzopyrene. Additionally, nicotine appears to depress the immune response to malignant growths in exposed tissue. The length of time a person continues to smoke as well as the amount smoked increases the person's chances of contracting lung cancer. If a person stops smoking, these chances steadily decrease as damage to the lungs is repaired and contaminant particles are gradually vacated. More recent work has shown that, across the developed world, almost 90% of lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking[3].
If you are really worried about your parents contracting lung cancer...research the severity of damage it can do to a person..so you can try to explain to them why you are so worried. Also, try to search ways to help them quit.
