Song Writing Tips.

Question Posted Tuesday August 8 2006, 10:28 pm

I've been writing songs for a while, but never have really came up with anything I like. I was wondering if any of you have tips on how to make a good song. Also once the lyrics are created any ideas on how to come up with a neat tune to go along with it to complete the final song?

Well, think about something big in your life that has happened, or that you appreciate. something where people can understand you. not the same old crap. i write songs too. then, study the form of a song--like where the verses, chorus, bridge, everything usually goes in a song. then, just start writing, from the beging of the story to the end, thinking of a tune along the way!!

One thing you should do is really listen to and study the lyrics of the bands that you like, and think about why those lyrics are good. Don't directly copy a style of lyrics, but draw inspiration from your favorite bands. (Reading poetry can also help with this).

Another thing to do is whenever you think of a phrase you like and could use in a song, WRITE IT DOWN. Just keep thinking about it and building on it, bit by bit, and eventually you'll come up with something great. Once, a phrase popped into my head that had nothing to do with my own life and built a song out of it.

Something to remember is that the important thing is getting the words down on paper. They don't have to be brilliant. You can always come back and edit them later. Just keep practicing and soon you'll come up with things you like.

Good luck, and I hope this helped!

what i do to make lyrics - is gather up all your old lyrics - find phrases or words you like - and make a new lyric.or write down about 30 words that you think would fit your feelings and then work around it,deleteing some words and adding some also-and my advice is to make up a tun on the piano or guitar first - then harmonise with that ^.^ i hope i helped!!

i like to come up with the music first, actually. most of the time i just listen to other music quite a bit, and i also listen to just random stuff (like when i'm at an intersection and the rhythms of cars honking and stuff) and it gives me ideas. then i just sit down at the piano and start playing crap. just whatever comes to mind. if i like it, then i write it down in this notebook that i keep by the piano. then i'll put words to it later, as soon as i figure out what the song needs to feel like. it's kind of weird though because to me, music is everywhere so when i hear something it reminds me of music... like when i'm carrying a lot of crap and i fall down the stairs, it makes a loud noise and stuff, to me that's music. i just get my inspiration from everywhere. try it sometime... even at school. there's plenty of noise there. sorry this is so random, but it really helps me.

whenever I am bored, I also write songs but I never like them. So to creat a nice beat to my songs... FIRST i make the beat. Anytype of beat you like. Try using GarageBand ((only for Apple Computers)). Garage band creats really cool beats for anytype of music. Then after you have a good beat, start making up lyrics. Heres a few websites on making good songs:
