Anybody got any suggestions on how to quit smoking? I've been doing it since I was 15 and I'm 24 now. I smoke a pack a day and I really want to quit. I'm trying to get pregnant so I know I need to and now's the time. Cold Turkey didnt work for me even though that may be the best way to go. It seems like I'll quit for a day or so then something I consider to be "hectic" happens and I feel like I cant concentrate or fix whatever problem I'm having until I smoke. All idea's would be helpful and I'll definatly take into consideration. Thanks.

The first two options are pricey but have had excellent results. Some people have quit after 2-3 sessions.
Make sure that everyone knows so they don't offer you one or can help to stop you if your resolve weakens. Keep a picture of a cute baby or a cot/crib that you would really like to have and look at it when you feel the urge to smoke. Avoid places where smokers go and under no circumstances go into any shop that sells cigarettes until you feel stronger and more able to resist.
Take up a hobby that will occupy your hands when you would normally smoke, (like knitting baby clothes?) and if you usually reach for one when you have eaten, or have a coffee break, get up as soon as you have finished eating and drink your coffee with company or standing up so you don't get into that 'comfort zone'.
It will be awful for the first few days but then it should start to get easier, you've had the strength to make that decision so now just hold on in there.
It's great that you want to do this and you will feel the benefit of it quite soon.
Hope that helps and I wish you the best of luck for quitting and for the future pregnancy. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]

It is still really easy to slip up if you have a bad day or are around friends who smoke. Just don't go out and buy yourself a pack when you want just one, see if you can just bum one- otherwise you'll smoke the whole pack (because it's there) and be back to square one. Another tip when you first start to quit- go away someplace new, like on vacation. The change of environment will disrupt your regular habits and it's easier to just not smoke and use the gum instead. When you get back, you've alread past the physical withdrawl stage and all your craving will be only pyschological. [ Tulipg17's advice column | Ask Tulipg17 A Question ]
sassysara answered Tuesday August 8 2006, 11:49 pm: As a woman who quit smoking to have a child, I will tell you what worked for me; I used the losanges they are fairly new, but they worked better the the gum (no sore jaw) and the patch (no weird dreams) and when I became pregnant I learned how to knit and ate ALOT of carrot sticks..Don't get me wrong I still crave a smoke now and then and when I go out for a drink I am sure that I will have one but now I put my child first and its not that hard. Also when you do quit do not let anyone smoke in the house, EVER. It makes a big difference.
I also created a support group with my friends. IT really helped.

*The losenges are called "Commit losenges", they work on the same principle of the gum they have nicotene in them so it deals with the craving. Also I work in a field where I not only get verbally but physically abused stress is no excuse, it will never get easier to quit you just need to set your mind to it and quit. Sounds impossible but every day gets easier.* [ sassysara's advice column | Ask sassysara A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Tuesday August 8 2006, 9:33 pm: i don't smoke, but here's an idea: you need to tell ALL your friends and family that you're quitting. people at work and everybody. then, throw ALL your cigarettes away. ALL OF THEM. don't buy any more. and chew gum (i've heard that helps, but once again, i don't smoke so i wouldn't know). that way, if people see you with a pack, they'll be like, "weren't you supposed to quit?" it's kind of a peer pressure thing i guess. it's great that you're quitting, and good luck! willyoucatchme answered Tuesday August 8 2006, 9:08 pm: Personally, I don't smoke, but I know plenty of people that do. Just recently my mother stopped at smoking for over 30 years. She used the gum, which really seemed to help. What helped her most was a website (www.quitnet.com) that provided her with an outlet instead of smoking, meeting new people that were going through the same thing she was: WITHDRAW! She loved telling me how many minutes/hours etc. she had added onto her life by not smoking (the website calulates this). It also gave her a great support system. Hope this helps. Good luck with the quit!!!
LoveToLaugh37 answered Tuesday August 8 2006, 9:01 pm: First, stop buying them (Obviously.) But, like tryr to fill the time when you use to smoke by doing something else. Like chewing gum (Nicotine gum, perhaps?) or eating sunflower seeds. Something else to get hooked on, ya know?
ductape_n_roses answered Tuesday August 8 2006, 8:56 pm: I'm guessing that you're married, right? Smoking is a really bad habit and it each smoke you smoke can shorten your life by 11 whole minutes! It's ends up consuming 25 years of your life you could live if you weren't a smoker!
Smoking is a hard habit to break. Cigarettes are very addictive and when you try to quite, it seems like you're going to die and such.
But consider this, in that cigarette, there's stuff in there that are used to preserve DEAD FROGS.
Have your husband help you. Get your family to chime in. Try to get yourself away from people that smoke or go to places that will tempt you to smoke.
Pick the nonsmoking sections in restraunts, hotels, and such. Throw away ALL the cigarette boxes you have. Matches, lighters, ash trays. Everything. Occupy yourself all day doing activities, reading, watching TV, etc. When you go out shopping and you know there will be packs of cigarettes on sale, take your buddy that's going to help you quit to resist buying any packets. Or bring only a limited amount of money only enough for food and such.
When you have cravings for a smoke, remember that every drag is like inhaling fume from a toxic waste factory. Chew gum or munch on something. This doesn't mean eat all the fattening food you can or start drinking. Chew gum, buy those patches that help you quit, etc.
