Wisdom teeth.

Question Posted Thursday August 3 2006, 5:37 pm

I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out next week, and I am kind of scared, even though I'll be put to sleep. I guess the thought of people ripping out 4 of my teeth freaks me out.

Does anyone have any tips on getting through it, or getting through the soarness afterward? Thanks.

I had some teeth pulled, and my dad was watching. I didn't feel a thing, but he said he wanted to strangle the dentist for making me bleed (and he's not a violent guy :). So, you should obviously eat soft things... probably like shakes and soup the first few days. Ibuprofin works best for me as a painkiller. Good luck with you teeth...

before you have it done when you're just talking to the doctors and nurses, be as at-ease as possible. if you're nervous the doctor or dentist will try to stop you from being nervous and explain in great detail what's happening which could be worse. so smile and make jokes about the crappy decor and show as little fear as possible. the doctor will become at ease with you which will help you out.

as for getting through the soreness, don't try solid foods for a week or so. if you really really need them then go for it, but mush them up as much as possible. you'll be scared to chew on your side teeth for fear of getting something stuck in the holes so you'll automatically chew with your front teeth which will make ALL of your teeth ache. they're not meant for that. you might also request a water syringe (without a needle) from the surgeon before you go under. it's a LOT better than swishing with salt water. you just fill it with warm water and squirt it into the holes. you can't get out of salt water, but you can cut back on it if you use a water syringe. also, it's a lot harder to get infections if you temporarily abstain from meat and dairy and eggs until the stitches wiggle themselves out. this also cuts down on infection if you skip a salt rinse once in a while.

edit: alternate pain medications. don't take vicodin all the time. you can alternate it with another strong pain med they give you (lodiene, I think I was given) or ibuprofen (only during the day because it won't take away all of the pain enough to sleep). if you rely on vicodin completely you'll fuck up your sleep schedule and could become dependant on it. I tended to use lodiene if I was going to be awake and vicodin asleep. I'd often sleep 12+ hours on vicodin or wake up woozy and fainty. never take vicodin without eating first (or drinking something heavy like milk though I don't endorse drinking milk) and never shower if you took vicodin less than 14 hours before. I once took vicodin because I was in intense pain and ended up sleeping from 3 PM to about 8 AM the next day waking up once in the middle only to take more vicodin. I had to meet some people for an english project, but ended up fainting in the shower and nearly vomitting because I didn't eat with my vicodin. just don't take it twice in a row. if you can, try and avoid it altogether.

its not as bad as you think

ad did you know they really don't but you to sleep.. they give you stuff to make you drowsy and erases your memory and also numb you.. because otherwise they would have to put tubes down your throat and what not which makes it hard

anyway its acually easy. They give you enough pain killers so you are fine and stock up on ice cream and stuff like that. and don't plan anything for the next 3-4 days to allow for you to feel better and for the swelling to go down.

Over the years i had 4 molars taken out (in like 4th grade, the same way they take wisdom teeth out) and i also had 14 baby teeth take out without meds because they didn't work on me... and if i could go through all of that you can get 4 wisdom teeth out

Hey I had 8 wisdom teeth pulled at once (I have too many teeth freakish I know) and honestly the surgery part is the easiest part of all! It's much better then being awake, as for the pain aftrwards your dr. will give you pain pills make sure you take them esp. the first couple of days, if they are not working for you then also take one motrin/advil.

Whatever you do DON'T USE A STRAW your dentist will tell you this as well it causes "dry socket" which is very very painful.

Hope this helps, good luck.

one piece of advice: buy frozen peas! lol it sounds weird but putting a bag of frozen peas on your cheeks works WAYYY better then an ice pack. my sister got her wisdom teeth out and the oral surguon even told her to use peas.

well i've never gotten my wisdom teeth out but i have gotten two teeth pulled without being put to sleep, and then i've gotten surgery on my mouth and have been put to sleep. to me, it was actually kind've fun to be put to sleep. because you don't remember anything. all i remember is getting a little tired and then BAM! i was awake and it was all over. for the pain, have a bunch of advil or pain killers near by and each soft foods. i've also heard that eating cold foods (ice cream or waterice...yumm) helps with the pain more then warm foods (soups). you can try mac n cheese, applesauce, and soo much more.

GOOD LUCK :]

Well one thing you could do is to think about something that makes you reely happy and that might cheer you up a little. Like for instance the thought of my boyfriend or my friendz would most likely make me feel better.

I've never had my WISDOM teeth pulled, but I've had two regular ones pulled. I was going to be put to sleep, but I decided not to because I didn't want an IV. It also made me feel better because I could see that the doctors weren't like torturing me or anything lol. I couldn't even feel them pulling them out. And I barely had any pain at all afterwards. It is probobly a little worse with wisdom teeth, but I would still reccomend not getting knocked out.

Personally, I never had to go through the experiance of having my wisdom teeth taken out. However, my friend got hers taken out about 3 months ago. She said that when she was woken up from her sleep, she was very drowsy. The next day she couldn't remember anything, except for the part of the nurse telling her to count from 10-1 and then falling asleep. She missed a week of school and she said her face was swollen for several days. It's not a pleasant experiance but the end result is better then having to go through the pain from keeping your wisdom teeth in. Also, she couldn't eat much but used popsicles to put on where her wisdom teeth used to be and that helped relieve with the swelling. Good luck.
