This is going to sound really daft to most people so I apologise but I don't know how to properly apply eyeliner, so I was hoping someone might be good enough as to explain it to me?
I also need to know whether liquid or pencil eyeliner is better and what colours are best for me if I have brown hair and wide brown eyes?
caramella answered Sunday July 23 2006, 9:54 am: pencil eyeliner is a lot better because if you like cry or tear up it wont be as much of a mess as liquid eyeliner.ok to put on eyeliner you use the eyeliner pencil you put it right above your bottom eyelashes, its like your drawing your eyes from the right side of the top of your bottom lashes to the left and since you have big brown eyes you might not want them to look bigger by using eyeliner under your bottom eyelashes.and the eyeliner colors that would look good on you are black and dark purple. hannahd answered Saturday July 22 2006, 10:17 pm: I'd stick with pencil eyeliner. Most liquid eyeliner brands just get everywhere & smudge too much to where you have to redo it all just to fix it. If you want something less dramatic and a little more natural looking than black, go with a gray or brown.
Try to apply the eyeliner as close as to the inside of your eye so it looks more defined & natural. I think it looks good when the line is thicker near the outside of your eye & goes thinner as it goes in (towards your nose). If it's all one thickness, it kinda looks bad. But I guess it depends on how well you do it & the shape of your eyes.
If you want your eyes to look smaller, but more defined, apply a thin line at the top of your eye (close to where your top eye lashes).
aljhgoons4life answered Saturday July 22 2006, 10:11 pm: are you from england. im have british. my dad says daft all the time. haha. well eyeliner. lets see. you can either put it on the top or on the bottom or both. i put mine only on the top. i pull my eyelid towards my eye and i use a pencil and start at the part of my lid closest to my lid and work towards my ear. put it down as far as you can. work it into the bases of your eyelashes. a color for you is probably black or brown. maybe experiment! enjoy! you can im me if you have questions [ aljhgoons4life's advice column | Ask aljhgoons4life A Question ]

Melody answered Saturday July 22 2006, 7:15 pm: If you have wide brown eyes, I think amethyst eyeliner would be the way to go. Now before freak out to bad, let me make it clear that most all purple eyeliner is very subtle. The reason i'm suggesting this to you is because certain colors make eyes stand out more. And if you do decide to take my advice on the amethyst eyeliner; try using violet eyeshadow all over your eyelids, deep jade on the crease, and light jade on the brow bone. If you like this idea, try using amethyst mascara also. If I were you, I would go with the Almay Intense i-color for brown. You buy the eyeliner, mascara, and shadow seperate but they look wonderful together.
Liquid eyeliner is pretty, but it's also harder to apply than pencil. So I would use pencil if I were you, at least until you got the hang of putting it on in general. However if you decide to use the Almay I suggested, the eyeliner is actually a glimmer stick. It's not that hard to apply but be careful.
Here are some steps to follow in the process of applying eyeliner:
1. Consider the type of look you're after. Pencil eyeliner gives your eyes soft definition, while liquid versions offer precision and drama. You can also moisten dark eye shadow and apply it with a small, flat brush. But keep in mind what I told you earlier about liquid being harder to apply.
2. Prepare a cake liner or a dark eye shadow by applying a small amount of water to your brush. Or, if you're using a pencil eyeliner, ensure that you've sharpened the pencil adequately.
3. Move the wet brush gently through your cake liner or dark shadow. Hold the brush or pencil as you would hold a pen.
4.Tilt your head back slightly and bring your eyes to a half-open state. This creates a good angle for application, while allowing you to see what you're doing.
5. Draw a line across the upper lid just above the lashes, from the inside corner to the outside corner of the eye. If you're using liquid liner [keep in mind about what I told you] allow it to dry before opening your eyes all the way, or the color may transfer into the crease of your eye.
6. If you used a brush or a pencil, soften the look by gently smudging the line with your brush, a cotton swab or your finger.
7. Line the lower lids. Moving from the outside edge inward, draw a line on the outer two-thirds of the lid or more, depending on the look you're going for. Your line should be slightly thicker at the outside corner, becoming thinner as it moves in toward your nose. Using your brush or pencil, lightly stroke the area. If using a liquid liner, apply it in one smooth stroke. Apply less color so your eyes don't appear raccoonlike.
If you decide to use liquid eyeliner, don't get upset with it. It takes practice, so one day when you're home, get some make up remover and some eyeliner and practice, practice, practice.
Mackenzie answered Saturday July 22 2006, 6:59 pm: I have big, brown eyes, with long, dark, brown hair. I wear black eye liner on the top and bottom lids. I happen to think it looks terrific. Match that with some white eye shadow, and it's my major confidence boost.
When it comes to liquid eye liner or pencil eye liner, it's just a personal preference as to which we use. Certain things suit certain people. However, if you ask... chances are that most people will tell you that pencil is a better choice for them. It's a great start for a beginner who is just getting used to it. If you mess up, pencil is a whole lot easier to clean up and re-do than liquid is. Also, if you plan on carrying it around in a purse or pocket.. you risk the chance that the liquid may ruin [though I don't suggest carrying eye liner in your pocket]. If you DO mess it up, just take a tissue and slowly run it along the rim of your eye lid. It will come right up.
Generally, desired effect of eye liner is to create the illusion of darkness just above the lashline to enhance the look of the lashes. To apply it, gently hold your eye lid down, and start at the inner part of the lid [closest to your nose]. Then just simply draw a thin line smoothly and evenly along the top and bottom lid, getting as close to the lashes as possible. If it looks like there is a space between the liner and your lashes, then I guess you just have to thicken the line a bit. Or, if you'd rather have a very thin line, I guess you just have to try again. One last thing, make shore you draw the line all the way to the outside corner.
If you're still experiencing difficulties, don't get discourage. It will probably take some practice. It took me a while at first, too.
And as for products, I think the two best brands of eye liner out there are "Meryl Norman" and "Beautique". "Meryl Norman", which can only be purchased at "The Meryl Norman Cosmetic Studios", is pricey [typically $8.50 - $15.00], but it really is good stuff. It goes on wonderfully, and it stays on all day! On the other hand, I happen to think that "Beautique" is better. However, I've only seen "Beautique" at "Sally's". Good news though, it's only .99 cents. Trust me, I wouldn't ever buy crap make up! I get only the best, so do not let this dollar price throw you off - you'd be cheating yourself out of the best product out there!! I actually prefer "Beautique" out of any other brand of eye liner on the market, based on it's performance alone! "Beautique" glides on smoothly and really lasts all day! I honestly can not promote this item enough! And if you still have doubts... for only .99 cents.. it's worth a shot!! [:
I'm sorry for the long reply. I get too into these make up questions. If you'd like further assistance, don't hesitate to ask! Goodluck! :D [ Mackenzie's advice column | Ask Mackenzie A Question ]
orphans answered Saturday July 22 2006, 6:54 pm: If I had brown eyes, I would still use black eyeliner. It really depends on if you like thick eyeliner or thin... liquid eyeliner is typically for the eyelid only, and it's usually thin. I like thick, dark eyeliner, so I use a black pencil. And if you want to learn how to use it, just experiment a lot. I used to experiment before I took a shower so I just could wash it off. [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
