Question Posted Thursday July 20 2006, 4:45 pm

recently i learned how completly nieve ive been. it turns out like a ton of people at my school cut themselves and i didn't notice at all. these are people im rwally close to...one's my best friend but you don't know her so as i promised i probably dont have to kill myself for telling you. you know i dont want her to hurt herself and what hurts me even more is that she says its the only thing that makes her happy. when i think about it i dont feel like im thinking a bout the same bff ive had since 1st grade and i just want her to stop. shes trying but im afriad if she doesn't have a theat it wont work. i dont want to tell an adult(well canr really) and i dont want her to be unhappy...but i DONT WANT HER TO KEEP DOING IT! How can i tell her to stop? and this doesn't mean shes like a masochist does it?

First off cutting is an addiction and she may not be able to stop. You need to talk to an adult and make sure she gets help.

As for what gatekeeper or Jon said, Manic Depression has NOTHING to do with cutting. Manic depression is when you have extreme highs and lows it is also called bi-polar disorder and is an extremely serious diagnosis.

Clinical Depression could be one of the reasons behind your friend cutting but she needs professional help to diagnose this and get her treatment. By telling you are not hurting your friend or being a bad friend you could be saving her life so even if she gets mad she will realize that your actions show how much you truly care.

Hope this helps

the reason she is doing this is because she isn't happy. cutting makes her happy because when you cut it lets out something in you blood that gives the cutter relief. i tried cutting a couple times and i continued it on for a while...but once i realized what i was doing i stopped. Tell her there is other ways to relief herself of her unhappiness and take her out and have fun go to the movies and see something funny and then go out to eat it will show her you care about her. I would suggest that you tell an adult though because even though she may get mad in the end she will appreciate that you cared enough to get her help.

Hey there,
I`m going thru this, actually I've already been thru this. My friend cut too, same with like, everyone I knew. Each time I asked her why, it was a different reason, it was absurd. I found out, most people I knew doing it, only cut because they thought it made them "cool" I do not understand this, but still you need to talk to her. I couldn't make any of my friends stop, because I'm not "cool" enough to convince them what they're doing wasn't helping their social status. So, I'm asking you, to talk to her. Figure out why she's doing it, and then, try to help keep her busy. Take her to movies, sleepovers, bowling, whatever you can, and show her life is happy and fun, without razors and blood. <3

Your should really tell her she needs to stop.If she still doesn't stop you need to tell an adult.Your not tattle-tayling on her, always remember your helping her.I know i would just hate to sand there and see my friend hurt herself.Overall my point is to tell an adult and take action.NOW!

hey,
i know a lot of people who cut and who have. she is probably so depressed. Even though it is hard to tell an adult i think it is in best interest to talk to a consular about your friends problem. Threats don't work and can even make your friend cut herself more. Another thing you have to do is plan fun activities to do together to get her mind off her pain. Right now it may seem like you are helping your friend by not telling anyone but in the end you are acually hurting her.
love,
Brittni

GateKeeper answered Thursday July 20 2006, 5:05 pm:
Ok i want you to understand somthing, your friend is in a depressed state, the reason she cuts is because it gets her mind off her inner pain, this is likely due to a medical disorder. honestly the best thing you can do is bring her in to the docters to get her diagnosed for manic deprision and inform a trusted adult because although you dont want your friend to be mad or unhappy with you you most understand that this IS a matter of life and death, this could kill her and can leave painful scars(mentally and phisiclly) with the help of a doctor, trusted adults and you, a true friend, she can pull throught this.
please contact me if necasary or if you just want to talk and your friend can of course come to me, my email and AIM are in my column
