tanning

Question Posted Wednesday July 19 2006, 9:27 pm

Ook, I want to go to a tanning booth so bad! I know they arn't safe, and everyone tells me I'll get skin cancer, but so many people tan outside in the 100 degree weather and thats just as bad! Nothing in this world is 100% safe, and thats the chance you have to take. Should I go tanning? And how dark does it make you? And since this is my first time how long should I go in, and do I have to take off all my clothes off?

Sure, go tanning. Also why not start smoking, eating lots of trans fats and quit exercising?
Look, it's up to you if you want to do things that clearly harm your body, but there are haelthier alternatives like spray tans and self tanners. Why not try those first?

Hi

Three summers ago I started tanning to look great for my wedding. I absolutely loved it!! I kept tanning even after my wedding for about another year.

I'm very pale, so I started at only four minutes, and gradually got up to 20 mins, three times a week. I started to notice these marks on my legs and couldn't figure out what they were. They were kinda reddish brown and different sizes. I went to my doctor to ask her what they could be and she said that was my HUGE RED FLAG!! Those marks were skin damage, and I had better stop laying in those beds. I of course never went back. I have had a couple of those spots dug out of my leg to have them tested, and thankfully I stopped in time. The spots on my legs will NEVER disappear...I have them for life...and they are not that pretty.

Now, I did some research and I found out that laying in tanning beds is actually more harmful to you than laying in the sun. Minimal sun exposure daily is actually good for you, and your body can benefit from it (keeping in mind that you should always wear sunblock).

So, it's really up to you...do you want to risk your health to look a little darker, or do you want to get a healthy dose of sun everyday and go from there?

Good luck.

Brenda

I always thought the sun & tanning beds were equally bad for you. But I've read tanning in a bed once a month have been proven to increase your risk for skin cancer more than you could imagine (can't remember the exact percentage). If you want to go tanning, go for it. Just inform yourself before going & be sure to limit your visits. I've been going on & off (about 4-5 months out of the year) for 3 years. I have never been able to get any color from the sun, but I tan very easily in tanning beds. It's hard to say how dark you can get because everyones skin reacts differently. Basically, you could probably get as dark as you want. But like I said, I wouldn't overdo it. Your first time you will only go in for about 5-7 minutes depending on you're skin tone & how it reacts to the sun. Don't expect to see major results the first couple-few times because you're just taking precautions without overdoing it at first. As long as you don't burn, you will continue to increase your time a couple-few minutes each visit. If you happen to burn (which is not uncommon) wait for it to heal before going back. Don't get discouraged and think you will always burn everytime you go. Your skin just isn't used to the tanning bed, but will adapt to it overtime. If you don't want tanlines, you can tan naked. (Don't worry, they clean them!) But if you prefer to keep anything on, that's fine as well.

if you want, you can go tanning, but try not to do it for more than 1 hour a day, every other day. everybodys skin is different, and others tan easier than others. like irish dont tan as well as the portuguese. you can wear a bikini [strapless suggested], or you can take off your clothes

Tanning salons aren't safe. But neither is outdoor tanning. Personally, what I do is, I tan in the booth and then anytime I go into the sun I wear sunblock to avoid double damage. I never tan outside anymore [ plus I don't want to be uneven ].

If you want to go tanning real bad, go for it. I wouldn't say "Yea! You should totally do it!" because as you know, its not good for you. But I couldn't tell you NOT to do it because I do as well.

You have to go probably... 3 times in order to see a good difference. If its your first time going in, you should start @ 12 minutes. Every other time, go up 2 minutes. First two times: 12 minutes. Next two times: 14. Next two times: 16 & so on. The max you can do is like 20 minutes. And you would want to go 2-4 times a week to actually keep your tan up. If you want, you can take all your clothes off, you can go in your bathing suit, or you can go with just underwear on [ I wouldn't recommend going in your bra ]. Salons are usually seperated into little rooms with a door you can lock & then the bed in there, which you close down on you--so its all private.

Theres also mystic tan which is a spray on tan [ most salons do that as well ]. Its harmless to the skin, but it doesn't last as long which means you'll have to go more often.

Don't foreget--you'll need a lotion [ tanning salons can sell this to you ]. Just like you use tanning lotion outside, theres a lotion used for indoor tanning. Use this! Otherwise your skin dries out and you won't be able to get a tan.

Hope I helped.

for the first time, if your skin is pretty fair i would suggest no more hatn 15 mminutes. and you can waer your bra and under wear or you can wear a bathing suite just make sure you wear the eye protection. the more you go the darker you get, but if you are worried anbout getting skin cancer you can get a spray on tan.

You shouldn't really go tanning you should just get a spray on tan but don't use too much or you will turn orange. also if you get a tan the stay in for about 5 or 10 minutes and you don't have to take all your clothes off keep on like a bikini or bathing suit. there is usually a curtain in the room to get out and that brings in a little light

Youre right nothing in this word is 100% safe. Thats why people take chances. I used to go tanning, to me theres nothing wrong with it. It can make you pretty dark if you go for a while and consistantly. The first time you go in i would say about 5 minutes. Then, work youre way up to 7,10,12,ect. You dont have to take all youre clothes off. It depends on if you want tanning lines. I prefer to leave my underware and bra on because i think it looks more natural with tan lines. But, its totally up to you.

Goood luck! ♥

You don't have to take all of your clothes off, but if you don't you will have lines. So I would suggest either going topless, wearing a swimsuit, or going nude. It feels weird going nude but nobody can get in so it's not like anyone could see you like that.

Also since it's your first time, just tell the people at the salon that. They will tell you how long to go in, based on your skin tone. The first time I went in they told me to go for 7 minutes. It didn't darken me at all. I didn't go after that. They say it takes 3 or 4 times to get any darker. Some people get darker right away. It won't make you REALLY dark unless you go a lot, for long periods of time, and use really dark lotion. That's another expense, too - lotion. If you don't use it, it'll take a lot longer to get a tan. Ask the salon which one they would recommend. Usually one with a bronzer is best.

Good luck, hope this helps.
