my knee

Question Posted Wednesday July 19 2006, 10:46 am

My knee has been like hurting lately.
When I say lately, I mean for about a 3 weeks?
It like hurts when I move it a certain way and cracks a lot.
Like yesterday, I barely bumped it on my computer desk.
And it hurt so bad, I nearly cryed.
Going to the doctors is not an option.
My mom thinks its all in my head.

What could be wrong?

My mom and I went through the same battle.

Of course there really was something wrong with my knees.

My knee would pop, and I could FEEL it popping with my hand on my knee every time I bent my knee. It hurt to walk, sit, stand, lay down - anything.

So I went to a doctor and the doctor said that I had tendonitis and that I should ice it and heat it and he gave me some home exercises. Yeah... that didn't work. So a few months later I went to a different doctor and she told me that I had Chrondromalatia Patella; which is a softening of the cartilage behind my kneecap. So we did an MRI and it came back completely normal. So we did physical therapy for a while and it got better. But then we went on vacation to DC and it got really really bad.

Turns out, I have a abnormal piece of tissue that is sliding under my kneecap, which is what is popping every time I walk. This condition is called Plica. It doesn't show up on MRI or x-rays. I had to go through a steroid shot under my knee cap - no pain killer, just a four-inch needle stuck in my knee. Then we ended up doing surgery. My other knee has the same problem and I'm having surgery on it in two weeks.

Since you don't know why your knee is hurting, it could be growing pains - but that is really unlikely, with the bumping it and for three weeks? Not likely, possible, but not likely. For the time being, and since your mom doesn't believe you, just take it easy. Get an Ace wrap and wrap it up or get a brace. My brace came from Walmart and it's Muller brand. That's what my orthopedic surgeon told me to use, and she told me a few places to get it, and those places were SO expensive. I got the same brace at Walmart for 20 dollars less.

If your knee is swelling then you should put ice on it. Even if it doesn't swell, but ice makes it feel better - ice it once or twice a day for fifteen minutes or so. Ice only helps for the first fifteen minutes it's on your body. After that all it's doing is freezing you. Take Ibuprofen or Advil as directed on the bottle. Something like Tylenol won't help with the swelling, and often the swelling is what makes your knee hurt so much.

If your knee is still hurting in a couple of weeks, mention it to your mom again and ask to go to your family doctor.

I sincerely hope you don't have to wait three years for a real answer, like I did. Get well soon!

Well, Im no doctor, but I have had horrible pains like this too. Only on my finger. MY problem was that I had a bad infection in it. I waited to go to the doctor until it was almost too late. Im not saying that is what is going to happen to you. But you might not want to rule out the doctor just yet. Another reason is you might have a cist. My brother had one in both of his knees and it KILLED him for a long time. One is still there to this day. Yet ANOTHER reason this could be hurting is you could just have a bruse on your bone. This could also hurt like crazy. You might not have these things, but you also might. I would say to go to a doctor, that is the only one to tell you what it is. And explain to your mom that it hurts like crazy. She will listen if you tell her. Hope I have helped. :]

I have the same problem with my knees. Depending on how old you are, it could be growing pains and any sort of other things, but no matter what it is, take some tylenol or something like that and get a brace or wrap it up and switch between icing it for 20 min and then not. That should help it feel better!

yea my knee snaps a lot too. what you need is a knee brace, and try not to put too much pressure onto it (that means try not to run as much, because running compacts the joints together)

A number of things can cause knee pain, such as injuries to ligaments, arthritis, tendonitis, cartlidge problems, dislocated kneecaps etc..
To ease the pain, or if it's swollen, use an ice pack and get a knee brace/tight bandage (not too tight!) to restrict movement and make it heal.
If it's still there in 1-2 weeks without any improvements, you really should see your doctor just to be sure what it is and to get treatment if necessarry.
Hope you're feeling better soon. :)

well, you need to wrap it or tape it, or get a brace. an ace bandage is easy enough to find, any local drug store. a knee brace is also easy to find. this should help.

i hope your knee gets better!
