Question Posted Sunday July 16 2006, 10:37 am

This is long so be prepared...

I'm 13/f and I'm having trouble with my body image. I used to be overweight (about 2 years ago) but then my mom helped me get into a better diet and now I'm not SO overweight and fat. Over the past few months I've been starting to eat sweets here and there but I'm still exercising a lot. The feeling of "Oh my gosh I've gotten so fat" suddenly came on in the past month. I have even gained weight and I'm really, really close to being over weight according to the weight chart. I will admit that I'm one of those girls who says "I'm fat" in front of my friends and especially my mom and expect to hear "oh no you're not." So when I said "I've gained a lot of weight!!! GOSH I'm starting to get so fat again..." to my mom she didn't say anything like "you're over reacting...you look just fine." She simply said "well, you're going to have to work on that." I was shocked =O I couldn't believe that even she had started to notice (and in a way agreed with me) and now I'm starting to wonder if other people notice. So...I got really depressed about it...and said to myself "if I could just be skinny I'd feel so much better about myself..." I hate thinking that the only way to get thin is to just not eat. I also realize I'm putting how I LOOK in front of my HEALTH and it's bothering me that I am ignoring what becoming a semi-anorexic would do to my health. I'm not exactly "huge" but I do have plenty of extra pounds I want to get rid of. At the moment I'm really upset because I don't know what to do. When I talked to my mom she just said "well, you need to get back into eating healthy" but I am and it ISN'T WORKING. She also says "You are also over reacting about becoming anorexic. you're being such a drama queen." HELLO! I'M SERIOUS HERE!! and i don't plan on becoming skin and bones. I really need some advice on what to do...I'm worrying myself by the way I'm thinking! =[

I know where you're coming from, honey, and you're definitely not alone. As long as you are in the normal range of the weight chart, you're fine. Could you improve upon your health? Yes, and its good that you recognized that. But you also have to realize that you lost a great deal of weight and took a giant step to being healthier, and you should definitely be proud of that.

As to the "semi-anorexic" thing... I was just like you. During lunch, I never ate, and when I did, it was half of a 100 calorie pack. I starved myself until dinnertime, where I didn't even eat my full meal. It didn't pay off. I only lost 2 pounds a month. Now that I'm eating more and eating correctly, I can loose an easy 4 pounds a month if I try hard enough. So, my point is, eat, and eat right, because you actually gain weight by skipping meals.

I know your self image is suffering right now, but you need to be confident in yourself. You are beautiful inside and out at this very second, and you will still be just as beautiful, no more, no less, if you loose your weight. But, you will be healthier. If you loose too much weight, you won't be so healthy anymore. Once you are in the middle range of your weight chart, I would stop trying to loose your weight. Maintain the diet and exercise, just allow yourself to splurge every now and then on a sweet or two.

I could easily tell you "Is how much you weigh the most important part of you? Everyone is beautiful in their own way." However much it may be true, most people don't take their own advice, and think that way until they start looking at themselves. lso, lots of people just say that if they want to get a 5 without doing any work.

Don't listen to the user below that said "being overweight can't hurt you and you'll grow out of it." Being overweight is very dangerous to your health, and unless you do something about it now, you're going to grow up overweight. I should know---my mom is a pharmacist. The majority of overweight women have always been overweight---but if you take certain precautions now, you'll be fine.

I don't know how much you weigh, and whether you're truly overweight or not. Either way, it's pretty clear that you're having some body image problems and it's preventing you from having a realistic self-image. So what I propose is that you get into shape, do a bit of sensible weight loss, and maybe you'll be able to see yourself in a more sensible way.

However, you're not going to get rippling muscles overnight. It's going to take weeks--maybe months---to start noticing muscle.

Get at least 2 hours of cardiovascular exercise (meaning exercises that make you breathless and send your heart thumping) a week. This does not have to be a sport, though not discouraged. You can dance to your favorite music, bike to the grocery store......so on and so forth. Crunches and pushups aren't going to make you lose weight.

Don't plan on eating ANY junk food until you've gotten into shape. Ditto with red meat, butter, whole milk, bagels, cheese, avocados, anything made with a noticeable amount of oil, or any excessive amount of carbohydrates or protein. Definitely no on the deep oil-fried Twinkies.

For your source of protein, eat lots of nuts (the amount of fat won't hurt you), chicken, fish and soybeans. The last one sounds gross, but seriously, once you steam soybeans, it's really good. Trust me on this one. A great, healthy dinner could be chicken soup and fruit for dessert. Now, I don't mean Campbell's Chicken Soup. I mean REAL soup. When you get home from school, boil about 2 pounds of chicken bones WITH THE MEAT STILL ON and let it cook under low heat for a few hours. This will give you a nice chicken bouillon. Spoon out the oil on the surface, put in a few stalks of cilantro and enjoy! Feel free to add black sesame oil and noodles. Sesame oil is the only kind of oil that's good for your cardiovascular system. You can find the oil and chicken bones at any Chinese food store.

For carbohydrates, eat whole wheat bread, corn, potatoes and pasta. Make this food category your last priority.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Don't eat too many plums/prunes, though. You'll get a horrible case of diarrhea.

Happy eats!

-Loma

PS. Congrats on being the first 13-year-old I've seen in ages to use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation =]

I have expeiriece with this, its actually like, the same story. I was overweight 2 years ago, severly, and lost so much weight and gained HUGE amounts of muscle its not even funny how much muscle i have. Chances are people probably are tired of hearing you complain about yourself, so they dont say "oh your not fat" they say "work on that" people dont like to hear people fishing for compliments. I'm sure your probably very pretty. Don't worry about your weight too much as alot of people actually do grow out of being chubby etc. anorexia = bad idea. NOT a fun way to live, trust me :] If you are continuing to exercise, you are in shape and probably have a fair amount of muscle, so that could contribute to your weight as well. If you are eating relativly healthy and working out there is really not that much to be worried about. You can't be HORRIBLY unhealthy if you excersise regularly. Keep eating what you crave but just don't OVEREAT. Eat what you want when you want it but stop when you are satisfied. its ok to be hungry, so dont eat until you are completely full, eat until hunger subsides. And don't cut out junk completely because then you will want it and all that want will build up and will bust and you will binge (eat excessivly) of the candy or whatever you crave. Just cut back on it. I also suggest you maybe look up a chart of negative calorie foods, which are foods that burn calories as they are digested (Steak is a Negative Calorie food!). Keep working out. Just dont obsess too much, as stress can actually lead to weight-gain :] If the charts say you are normal, just dont stress. Good Luck & Let me Know how it goes. Just drop one in my inbox sometime:] I'd love to hear from you!

Whatever you do, don't become anorexic. That is one of the worst possible things you can do to your body. You can die from it. Get back on the diet that your mom helped you with. I'm sure your mom didn't mean that in a horrible way. She probably just let it slip out. I'm sure your not fat. But, if you feel you really want to lose weight, then just exersize more often and stick to that diet. I wish you good luck :]

Becoming anorexic is not the answer. People have died from anorexia. If you're anorexic, you can loose so much weight that you loose your period, even to the point that you don't have any breasts and your digestive system shuts down. Girls have been put in the hospital and have been physically unable to eat and had to be fed through a feeding tube up their nose and into their stomach. If you're anorexic for say.. eight months and loose 20 pounds; but then if you eat normally again you'll gain it all back, maybe even more, because your body thinks it's being starved so it stores away every bit of food possible.

The right answer is HEALTHY diet and exerscise. Lots of fruits and veggies and lean meat. Try to cut out eating stuff like hamburgers, steaks, bacon, and other fatty meats. Try to eat a lot of fish, chicken [not fried!], turket, and lean meat deer cuts.

Instead of grabbing a coke and three cookies for a snack, pick up a kiwi and some water instead.

There are more fruits than just bananas, apples, oranges and strawberries. Play with fruits, make your own fruit salad.

Exerscise is also key - but if you overdo it, you'll just set yourself back. Vary the exerscise you do, and start of slowly but keep at it.

Good luck!

If your mom says you look perfectly fine i wouldn't worry about anything, but to become skinnier just eat lost of fruits n veggies and excersize at least 3 days a week..eat a good breakfast..its the most important meal of the day..it gets your motabulism (dont know if i spelled that right) going faster. Some people have a slower motabulism than others which causes weight gain..i wouldn't worry about what other people think about you. in any of your free time do sit ups or crunches and push ups and make sure you get tons of sleep
hope everything works out great
