Yes, perms do turn out fine. I had one myself. And if you do want loose curls, just ask your hair dresser for loose curls. They do work out fine and they last about 3 months.
Good Luck=)

I've always wanted to curl my hair too. I just bought Studioline, but it makes my hair more wavy rather than curly, but you could try different curling gels. Also, you could curl your hair with a curling iron, curl your hair in curlers, braid your hair in tight braids or a tight bun after you get out of the shower and sleep with it in. hope i helped =) ]
I would suggest buying Wash n Curl [www.washncurl.com]
Or, if that doesn't work for you, I would suggest using hot rollers or a curling iron! :]
As for the perm, my friend got one and it ended up looking gorgeeeeous. So look into the cost of that and if none of this works then consider getting a perm!
goodluck! :) ]
i have the exact same problem, no matter what it seems my hair is always so straight. But when i do want curls i us a curling gel that also makes hair stay in place, and a curling iron if i want to make it better. ]
well you can use a curling iron to make curls and then loads of hairspray so it sticks...or use moose in wet hair, dry it, and then curl it either with a curling iron or medium sized curlers...perms damage your hair too much and are a pain once they start to grow o ut, but if you decide to go with the perm, make sure your hair stylist uses medium or large sized sets so there not grandma-ish... ]
There are a few things you can try - Straightening irons with the hair wrapped round it, heated rollers, ordinary rollers when your hair is wet, then blow drying them, (the larger the rollers the looser the hair will be), or a loose perm.
Perms are fine if you know a decent hairdresser that will do a loose one. This will just give you wavy hair but no tight curls. A good hairdresser will advise what is best and give you aftercare tips as well. Also with a perm, if you really hate the effect, if you wet your hair within 24 hours of having it done, the curls will drop out.
If you use the heated options, make sure you have a good heat protector for your hair to prevent damage.
The other thing is that the thicker your hair, the more difficult it is to keep waves in place for any length of time, as the weight pulls them out.
If you're really not sure, ask around for recommendations for a good hairdresser, they should be only too pleased to give you advice and suggestions.
Hope that helps, good luck. ]
After you get out of the shower, have someone French-braid your wet hair very tightly. Blow-dry or let it air-dry. When you undo the French braid, it will be very wavy.
Or, you can use a curling iron. Get the big one for loose curls. There will be easy instructions on the back. ]
if you use a curling iron the curls will be tight at first but then they will get loose and it gets really pretty or you couls do the gell and moose thing just scrunch your hair ]
What ever you do, DO NOT get a perm!!!!! My mom got one, and her's turned out like an afro. Try John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Around Style Starting Daily Shampoo and Conditioner. Then try putting mousse in wet hair and blow dry it on the low setting. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Or you could try a shampoo called Wash N' Curl. This works really well but it's hard to find.
Hope this has helped and good luck with your hair!
