cheerleading help

Question Posted Sunday June 11 2006, 10:48 am

okay well i am on my highschool cheer team and i am a back in my stunt group. before we go to camp we must have an extension. You know all the way up. well our flyer is brand new never cheered let alone flown before. we have a real good double base with craddle and just got a push up (double base pushing up to extension -- some people call it different things) well camp is at the end of the month and like i said we need a straight up extension. ive tried every peice of advice i could give our flyer but is there anyother tips i could give her to get over her fear and get her up easier? thanks sooo much =]

1. tell her to pick a spot on the wall to look at & DON'T LOOK DOWN!

2. hollow out

3. keep all her muscles tight when up in the extension . . pretend she is squezing a penny between her butt cheeks.

tell her to lock her knees, keep her back straight, and tell her to squesh her butt. also if posible try to get your team toghter at a pool and try it in the pool its a lot less scary IF you fall down to fall into the water. then mabye she wont be as scared to try it on grass. hope i helped!

tell her to keep her mind focused on one spot in the room and not to take her eyes off of it. you can also try telling her to imagine she's in a "box" yeah sounds totally pshyco but it has worked for our stunt girl before. oh, and give her lots of positive reinforcing.

Hey there, I'm a cheerleader too, also a back/base =D
Heres somethings to help her up.
oo1. Tell her to find a spot on the wall, about level to where she`d be when she`s in an extension. ( Like a paint chip on the gym wall about 8ft up or something ) Once she concentrates on that all she needs to worry about is keeping her legs locked and help pull up her own weight by using her arms.

oo2. Also, she may just feel uncomfortable around new people, like she doesn`t trust you. So try doing somethings like the "Fall Back" Where she just falls back into your arms. You could also try to strengthen your relationship by having sleepovers and showing her that you guys won't let her fall =D

Cheerleading is all about trusting your squadmates: show her that she can trust you, and that you guys won`t let her fall and everything should go well. REMEMBER: Practice makes perfect :D Goodluck!
