My neighbor lets their dog poo on my yard

Question Posted Sunday April 23 2006, 5:19 pm

So, me and my boyfriend just bought a house and the previous owners apparently never raked the leaves up, so the yard was full of leaves and trash and various poo's. Yesterday, we just got the last of the leaves raked up, and throughout noticed that there were a few piles of dog poo that weren't there the day before. I didn't think much of it, because I assumed that whoever left it just assumed that since the area was full of leaves and trash, that we wouldn't mind or notice a little "fertilizer".

But, today, just one day after getting the lawn trash and leaf-free, we noticed yet another pile of dog poo.

My questions are...
How can I catch whoever is letting their dog poo in our yard?
And, What should I do to make them stop?

Just so you know, the law in my town is a $500 fine for getting caught for not picking up after your dogs, but no one ever gets caught even though we live 50 feet from the police station.

First of all that's disgusting. I have the same problem her too. People are lazy and have no consideration.
Dog poo is not fertilizer. It contain hundreds if not thousands of bacteria including one that can cause a child to go blind. I think you should stake out the place and wait like I did. I found out who was doing it and brought it to there attention, which did not help. They are doing it late at night now.
so If you have better ideas, let me know.
My next move is to get a a sensor light and a camera. could you believe that. I can't even let my kids play out front or the back of the house.

First of all you can by a camcorder and set it up where it cannot be notice at the site where the poo always is or you and you boyfriend can keep and eye out and take turns watching the window and have a camera ready so when you catch the person you snap the shot of the dog and person then call the police to show them the pictures and get that person fined it work for my sister and her husband and my Aunt Jenna.

My aunt had the same problem. Her neighbor is like one of those crazy pet people and she has 3 dogs and 5 cats. They used to poop in my aunt's yard, and then my aunt finally called the animal patrol and they told the lady that if she didn't watch after her pets, she would be fined. So it has stopped ever since.

Can you guys afford a fence? Someday you should save up for a fence to prevent this type of thing. Set up a camera, maybe? I just checked and that idea was already mentioned. I'm such an answer thief!!! I don't know how impractical a camera would be. I have a small yard that would work just fine with the camera I have. I suppose it depends.

If not, set up a few bear traps. When you hear a loud yelp, BAM, you got the source of the poo piles, unless it's just some innocent bystander. In that case, you'll have to reset the trap and try again.

Or you can wait next to the door and scream at anyone who comes near during a 24 hour watch. That might do it too.

Get some neon spray paint, and paint lines on your grass (like construction workers do) then put those cute little flags up along the line. Make signs that say "Toxic Gas Leak" or something like that. Put the signs up. This will make it look unappealing for a doggy to even want to walk there, let alone leave you a gift.

I don't think cameras are such a practical idea, but you can keep an eye out, or keep your front blinds open, because I know when I take my dog out, I'm not going to let him poop on someone's lawn if they're home. Hang out on your porch often, just say "hi" to your neighbours, if you get friendly, they'll probably stop this behaviour. However, if you do catch someone on your lawn, letting their dog go, politely ask them to stop, and pick it up.

If you can't find the neighbours who are allowing their dogs to use your yard, either put a sign that says "no tresspassing", or get one from a local landscaping company stating that you've just had your lawn sprayed with chemicals, insecticide whatever, even if you havent, as it will keep people off the lawn.

If all of these suggestions don't work, and you know who is doing the pooping, file a complaint with the police station. If the complaint about the waste doesn't go through, try complaining about the noise the dogs make in the neighbourhood; I've known several people who have actually been fined for their dogs barking. Either way will make the pet owners keep their dogs on a shorter leash.

i would wait a few more days, and if you are still seeing dog poo in your yard, put up a sign saying something like you have installed cameras and if anyone is filmed leaving their dog's mess behind, you will turn it in to the police. you obviously don't have to install cameras, but that should scare away anyone who even thinks about leaving that stuff in your yard! hope that helps! :)

DeadMemories answered Sunday April 23 2006, 6:22 pm:
Whoa, sounds like a major problem. First off are you sure that your neighbors have dogs? If so then ask them about it or it could be a stray.

Another idea is, if you are extremely annoyed with this problem, install a camera for your yard. Simply attach it to your house and it will watch your yard for dogs and plus it catch any trespassers! So you will know which neighbors dog is doing it's business in your yard (that is if you have more than one neighbor).

Tip: Don't go to your neighbors and be like, "Get your stupid dog out of my yard!!" Just politely ask them if they think it's their dog and if it is then there's no problem if they keep it out. If the problem keeps occurring then go to the police and get help.

It could be stray dogs too. Most towns have them and if you see one ask the neighbors about it and if they all say it's not theirs then call the police so they can take them to the pound unless you want to keep it.

That's all I know of to do. Good luck with your problem!

that's a bit weird. i guess you can't sit there in the window & watch all day. put a sign in your yard?? that's the only thing i can think of. if you put a sign in your yard that says something like: Clean after up after your dog-$500 fine. er something. that might work. other than that there isn't much you can do. if you do go with the sign idea & it still doesn't work, i'd report it because that's really rude.

-hope that helped!♥
