I have a chance to be on the Oprah Winfrey show. She is looking to interview people with a mental illness and I have schizophrenia. I have been published in other magazines before for how I have managed to live with my condition; but have never been on television.
Some of my friends are telling me to go for it; but I don't know if I want this much exposure. Does anyone have any reasons why I shouldnt go on the show? And Pros or Cons? I havent made up my mind yet!

My friend is schizophrenic and I still don't understand much about it even after knowing him this long. I know HE would not do it, but he is a very shy and quiet type of person and sort of avoids the public eye. You've already been published in magazines and have been sharing your experiences with the world. Why not continue on? Knowledge is power. There's a lot of things I want to know and I know I'd definitely watch a show on that topic.
It's going to be rough since you'll be highly publicized. If you don't mind attention, questions, and everything else you can imagine..Then I don't see anything wrong with going on. It all depends on how you feel, if it's worth it or not. You've got a chance to tell your story and perhaps help some people who aren't as strong as you are, someone who's maybe not so comfortable with their illness. And that's a really good feeling. If you know you can handle the aftermath, I say go for it. Good luck. [ violet911's advice column | Ask violet911 A Question ]

1. you can stand that much attention
2. You like to help others recognize their problems
3.you wont use the attention in a negative way(no offense but some people brag)
Heres some cons about the issue.
1. You are shy about your condition or dont like to show it. (ya gotta be loud and proud:)
2. You dont want the attention in the first place
3. You get stage fright
orphans answered Monday March 13 2006, 3:42 pm: Oprah is amazing.
I honestly think you should do it share with otheres exactly what it is, and how it "works" (I've never heard of it whatsoever) I think its a good chance to let others know about it.
But you know it is quite of alot of exposure, and if you are not comfortable doing it (beacause alot, i mean alot of people watch oprah) then dont. [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]

Seeing someone else with schizophrenia on tv, living a normal life may give other people who are suffering from it some hope and they might not feel so embarrassed about it. It will also help to educate people as to what schizophrenia really is. I don't think that most people have a full understanding of what it is and if they can understand, it will be easier for them to accept people with it. On the other hand, should you decide to go on the show, people you know might see you in a different light. People who didn't know about your schizophrenia before will now and you may not want that to happen. Hope I helped. Good Luck with your desicion.

You should really go. People might look up to you in the ways you`ve handled this if they have schizophrenia or not. They might find you as a role-model. It`ll be great. It`ll give people a chance to know what it is[since I`ve never heard of it..]how you`ve dealt with it, and how it`s impacted your life.
karenR answered Monday March 13 2006, 7:19 am: The pros would be that you might very well help others who are struggling to live with schizophrenia. Maybe give someone hope.
The only con I can think of is that people will see who you are and know of your struggles.
If those who know you already know about what you live with everyday...then that isn't really a problem either.
Should you decide to do it, then just let those friends who you think need the information know ahead of time. That way they aren't surprised. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
LoViNu2mOuCh answered Monday March 13 2006, 4:21 am: I think that is a great idea for you to go. It will be a chance to tell people about what you have gone through and people will be able to understand the condition more..so I really think you should do it. It is also an amazing opportunity that most people will never get to experience!
