If a white person called a black person a "nigga" on the computer, is this some sort of discrimination, could that person get in any kind of trouble or anything like that?
Thank you.
Can someone get in trouble? It depends on the site. On most places, you can report the person and they'll get banned. You definitely can on Advicenators.
Legally, no, you couldn't get in trouble. But if a policeman hears you talking like that, he'll pull over and give you a talk (Mind you, don't think I know this because I called someone a n*****. I saw someone do that a few weeks ago). However, that isn't an excuse to use awful words like that. [ TheHeadHonchoPoncho57's advice column | Ask TheHeadHonchoPoncho57 A Question ]

Racist comments can be considered hate crimes and if the person really wanted to, they could find a way to trace an IP address and figure out where it came from. jena4lopez answered Friday March 10 2006, 12:27 pm: I think it's bad.. but theres nothing you can do over the computer. Some kids think its funny to say it online all the time or say 'haha stfu nigger lolz'. It's not funny.. but they think it's okay to joke around like that with their white friends? You could show somebody that they said it but I dont think they can get in alot of trouble.. hope i helped. [ jena4lopez's advice column | Ask jena4lopez A Question ]
Avari answered Friday March 10 2006, 10:07 am: I, personally, would say it is derogatory. Then again, I would say that anyone of ANY race calling ANYONE else by that name would be derogatory. A lot of people think it's okay for black's to call another black "nigga," but I view it as a cuss word that is not approproate for use by anyone at all. Whether the person is being discriminatory or not is based entirely upon the situation, as well as the context. If two people were fighting or arguing, etc. then yes, it probably was meant as a racist insult. But if to people were just chatting it up, then probably not. If the person say....just randomly called a stranger "nigga," it's really hard to tell- they could just be messing around, like "hey nigga, what's up?" or something, or they could be sayong it with spite. However, I doubt the person would get into any trouble unless it got reported or something. Like I said, it depends entirely on whatever direction the conversation was going before they spouted out the "n" word. If it's a friend of yours, then confront them, and ask them directly. If they weren't trying to be hateful, they might not have known it would upset you.
craazylau answered Friday March 10 2006, 6:01 am: I think it depends entirely on the situation. If the person is using the word in a derogatory manner and mean to cause offence and they got found out then yeah i guess it's possible they could get into trouble. (and quite rightly too in my opinion). However if it's two friends chatting on the internet and they're joking around and the person knows they wouldn't take offence by using "nigga" it's unlikely the person would get upset and therefore they probs wouldn't get into trouble. Basically it all depends on the relationship between the two people and how well they know each other. However in my opinion i think words like that shpuld be left well alone because not only could they be interpreted as racist but there's confusion about whether it's nastiness or not!!
Just as an aside if you were asking whether the person could get in trouble with whoever manages whatever they're chatting on on the internet i guess it's a possibility but probably not, as again it would be very difficult to work out whether the person meant it in a derogatory manner or not.
