Question Posted Sunday January 8 2006, 7:31 pm

I was working at Old Navy for the past few months as a seasonal hire and they recently laid off all the new hires because we did pretty badly during our Christmas season. They told us that we would always be welcome back in the spring though but I don't really want to work there anymore.
1. I know this is a bad time for job searches but should I try looking for a new job anyway?
2. Before Old Navy, I only had volunteer experience. Would a store manager take a closer look at my resume because of my Old Navy experience? Do Old Navy employees have a particular reputation that might cause store managers to prefer them or look down on them?
3. Do you think a few months Old Navy experience is enough to work at specialty stores like American Eagle or Espirit?

You don't have to work there if you don't want to later, but if you really need money and you know they will hire you, then I would suggest you go back. Anytime isn't a great time to look for jobs the way our economy is going, but yeah, go look for a job, looking is always good, you never know what you will find. Volunteer experience is good to have, it shows responsibility, reliability, and actually loyalty to your work, so with the volunteering and ther old navy experience you should be a shoe in for hire. As far as the managers looking down on you for working at Old Navy, don't worry if they see the volunteering it will be fine, and as far as I know, Old Navy doesn't really have a bad reputation with their employees. Anyways AE and Espirit hire teenagers to work there because it gets more teenagers to come in. Sorry the was a bit long, but I hope I helped and if you need anything else my e-mail is on my column.

Well if you really need a job then you should go out and try and find one, so ahead and look and apply everywhere you can and take the 1st job which will take you. I don't know how Old Navy operates with employment but I know that while I was working in The Vitamin Shoppe they looked highly upon my volunteer time and my certification as a personal trainer, anything which adds good to your resume can only help. I dont know if a few months experience in ON is enough for a specialty store because I never worked at any of them. Just go out and apply everywhere you can, apply at every store you go to, its hard to be picky on where you want to work at this age, you just have to take what comes to you.

I don't know much about this. If you don't like working at Old Navy, don't. If you need the money then do it. I thinkt he store manager would take a closer look that you already had expirience working at a store. Old Navy employees don't have a particular reputation though. To work at American Eagle, Aeropostale you do not have to have the expirience. I know a few people that work there and they never worked at a store before and it was their first time.

Hi, I say apply for everything that you are interested in. There are far more exciting places to work for than Old Navy. Even if you don't have alot of experience go for it, the right employer will train you. Never short yourself, go for the gusto. Good luck on your hunt.

I'm not sure about AE, but I know that at Abercrombie and Hollister, you can't walk in and ask for a job. They choose hot people to work there, and they offer you jobs. Esprit might have a better chance at hiring you. Yes, look for a new job.
