A good book for a 15-year-old

Question Posted Sunday January 8 2006, 3:29 pm

My 15-year-old niece is having a birthday soonish and I'd like to get her a present. She likes reading so I figured a book would be good. What's a book that is of literary quality that a 15-year-old would like, but does not contain any sex or swear words (her mom wouldn't let her read it then)? And don't say the Princess Diaries series, I think she has all those already.

A Series of Unfortunate Events. It looks like it's for little kids, but I'm in high school and I love it.

try easy poetry. find out what her interests really are and ask at a good bookstore if they have anything of interest to her particular needs.

Well here are some authors that I was reading at that age (and still do), and you could just look them up, and see if anything they write strikes you as something your niece might like.

Caroline B. Cooney
Lisa Jane Smith
Christopher Pike
Dean Koontz

and if you're looking for something a little bit more on the literary side, I'd recomment "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, it's really great book. Hope this helps.

By 15, (at least the reading level for someone who enjoys reading) most books will have bad words in them. Most of the books i read in highschool had bad words in them and sex, etc. there's nothing you can do. (just letting you know before you go crazy trying to find one) anyway, i recommend a gift certificate to a book store she likes. to make it a bit more personal, you can get her a nice basket with some goodies like candy, a bookmark, or something small with the giftcard in it.
if you don't like that idea, i suggest shattering glass. it has some sex in it but not so much it would bother a 15 year old's mom. goodluck! <3

If she likes reading, chances are that she reads at a higher level. It's hard what to recommend because we don't know what types of genres she likes.
However, classics like Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice never fail to be a good reading experience.

The Boyfriend List. I just read it. It talks about relationships with boys, but it doesnt really have sex in it.

The Dating Game.

The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore.

The Seance.

Summer Boys.

The sequel to summer boys, Next Summer.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (never read those, but I'm pretty sure they are appropriate,)

Chicken soup for the teenage soul (theres 4 of them). Theres also chicken soup on tough stuff, and chicken soup on love and friendship. They are all for teenage audiences.

Just so you know, Hubble08 was very wrong. Gossip girl books are very interesting, and they are my favorites, but they have a great deal of cuss words and deal with a lot of sex, drinking, drugs, and all of the stuff going along with it. Not appropriate at all.

I think instead of getting her a book, get her a gift certificate to Barnes N Nobles or the local book store. That way, she can get a book she likes and you dont have to worry about whether she'll like it or not. Just a suggestion =)

I would recommend VC Andrew's "Flowers In The Attic", or Mary Downing Hahn's "Daphne's Book", or "Jellyfish". Those are my personal favorites!

A gift certificate to an online (or not!) bookstore is always the best choice for booklovers. This gives her the opportunity to pick the book that she would be most interested in, and shopping is always fun.

♥ Im 15 and im not really into reading but i always like those gossip girl books. It talks about a teenage girls life and situations they go through. I think they are pretty good. Im sure there appropriate too... he mom shouldn't bad a book about what goes on w/ a teenage girl.

FrEe2bMe answered Sunday January 8 2006, 4:08 pm:
Well, it really depends on what genre she likes to read but I would say a few would be:

Life in the Fat Lane
A Child Called It
To Kill A Mockingbird
Cold Sassy Tree
Da Vinci Code
