PB&J not helping

Question Posted Tuesday December 13 2005, 6:45 pm

Hey I'm 16 years old and a guy. I eat lunch at about 12.40, to get out of school at 2.40. I work out after school, mostly cardio workouts that go anywhere from 30-90 minutes. At lunch, there isn't always a variety to choose from, since it's the last one, and I usually get PB&J, but not by choice. I add a banana and some apple juice to keep things healthy, but that doesn't work for me. I either feel sick or too hungry when I work out after school. Any other foods or sandwhiches I should try? I'm not sure what to get to fill me up, not over fill me, but give me the energy I need for after school. Thanks - will rate.

Want honest advice? Don't eat sandwiches. Discover Tupperware and making your lunches and meals the night before. Apple juice isn't exactly healthy, it's just filled with sugar, drink water. Bananas are very good but have a lot of sugar in them also, but an excellent amount of potassium which is an electrolyte that is good for before you work out. Stick to a low GI carb and a good protein source (Chicken and rice, Tuna and rice something like that)

Occasionally you can sub this for a good protein drink. Whey protein powder, fat free milk, and Flaxseed oil, maybe a teaspoon or 2 of honey.

There is so much literature you can get on this topic if you are interested in that, Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding is an EXCELLENT book.

try getting a sandwich with at least some kind of meat on it because the protein from the meat will give you more energy and fill you up so your not still hungry

I think what you should do is talk to someone at your school. A guidance counselor, the superintendant, the principal, the nurse or some other authority figure. The school is at fault here for not having enough food available to all of their students. If you're given a hard time get your parents involved. The school will have to listen to your parents. In the meantime, try eating pasta and nuts. The peanut butter and bananas are good choices and are helping a lot more than hurting, so see if you can get two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or something. I hope this situation gets fixed soon and good luck!

Can you drive? If you drive to school pick up something from a gas station like Sheetz or something. If not, then just find something at school lunch.

I don't think school lunches are very healthy. Even though they have been trying to promote better eating habits, they really suck at it. Anyhow I'd pick a sandwich like ham/turkey/cheese on wheat or white bread. You need carbs, they will give you the energy you need through out the day.

Milk and dairy fills you up. Think of it this way: if you had two exchanges of dair such as cheese and yogurt or milk, however you want to set it up, try that. It's very filling and good for you too. But I know that a lot of people don't like milk. Try your best if you can.

*Fiber*
So important! These will make you full enough but not too over powering that it will make you sick. Fruits, veggies, and grains are all sources of fiber. Try and load up on the fiber if you can. I'm sure you'll notice a difference.
Good luck!
