Goth- after Punk started too die off in the late 70's, the sound of punk was less angry, more laid back. Listen too the band "Joy Division" They're one of the starters of Goth. The "Goth sound" wasn't accompanied by dark clothing until the band Bauhaus came around. It was kind of a mix between glam rock and punk. Their dark lyrics of death and old horror favorites played a part."
Emo- Emo'z are those teenagers that listened to Backstreet boys, until they became lame. Then they switched over too pop/punk'ish type crap. Stupid emo kids with their crappy music..
"I wish my lawn was emo, so it would cut itself."
As for being religious, doesn't really matter, Punks are anarchists, Goth's are nihilistic, and emo's are a mix. So it depends how strict your religion is. [ Derith's advice column | Ask Derith A Question ]
LoveObsidianitic answered Wednesday March 7 2007, 5:38 am: Of COURSE you can be both christian and goth, my dear! Goth is a way of living your life, the way you carry yourself, your own type of fashion. Christianity is religion, who you believe in. Two separate matters. In fact, a lot of goths I've heard of are christians. You could take Amy Lee from the band Evanescence, for example. Who can dispute her goth quotient? But she has said on many occasions that she is firmly Christian. And do you see any newsy reports of unChristian activity from her? Noooo.
Punk: People don't seem to get it. Punk was a music style, that has been overridden by the media. People also see punk as the mohawk-i wanna be sedated-chucks-put elmers glue in my hair to make it stick up-peirce every body part availible. The older one, can write a good rock song without screaming in it.
Goth: Gothic is a type of writing [vampires], architecture [haha like the buildings in europeeee], and ...erm...lifestyle? Not so sure on this one. Sorry, but they wear black and this girl in my class who way's she gothic told me she worships the devil and will kill me someday because I am human (no joke, I was seriously freaked out). The darkest of the 3, I'd say.
Emo: Ah, emo emo emo. It's even fun to say, isn't it? :]. Emo is short for emotional. Music style a few decades ago, it's back again...or did it ever leave? People connect it to extremely tight pants on guys, black hair with long bags, whore-ish photos, myspace, wrist slitting, extreme skinnyness, and guys kissing. "Emo" is overridden by the media and fakes.
It's all stereotype, honostly. I connect it to music style. Yes, there can be Christian punk and whatnot :].

stixnpix answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 9:15 pm: yah twisted sisters got it right. you don't label people. why do you want labels?? people will find some way to treat you badly because of it. and you don't just wake up one day and say "hey, i'm gonna be a punk! actually i'm feeling sort of emo" don't think so. people can label you, but its dumb. you can have different types of music taste, etc. and you can be into the punk scene or whatever but don't go around labeling yourself. be YOU for god's sake. FunnyCide answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 9:14 pm: Well... I just got called 'punk' or 'maybe gothic' a few minutes ago, and I'm a Christian.
Gothic : Black. Black. Black. Depression. Lots of depression. Usually has an addiction of some sort (cutting, drugs, anorexia, etc.), think... death. Suicidal. Heavy metal or hard core music, with some screamo and emo music. Baggy clothes. Makeup, even on guys. Black fingernails, even on guys. Skulls. Spikes. Lots of them.
Punk : Black. Black. Black. Depression. A good bit of depression. Sometimes has an addiction of some sort (cutting, drugs, anorexia, etc.), think.. heavy music. Death. Usually are skateboarders. Into extreme sports, something dangerous. Chains. Either baggy or tight clothes. Makeup, even on guys. Black fingernails, even on guys. Skulls. Spikes. Not as much as with gothic.
Emo : Short for EMOTIONAL. Wears their heart on their sleeve. Black. Black. Depression. A heck of a lot of depression. Easilly heartbroken. Think... tight T-shirts, band T-shirts especially. Girlpants on boys, boypants on girls. Think.. scene. Scene hair. Scene shoes. Scene jewelry. Emo music (such as Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights, Green Day). Music is depressing. Whining, sometimes screamo music. Black nails. Dark makeup.
That, is all stereotypical. STEREOTYPICAL.
You set your own rules for whichever you please.
Can you be a Christian and any of those above things? YES. I think you can be.
There are suicidal Christians. Moses and Elijah are two good examples of suicidal Christians. They weren't gothic... but suicidal nonetheless.
If you're going around swearing, living life for the next high, or the next party, or the next time you'll have sex; or if your life is centered around evil, I'd question your faith.
Can you enjoy dressing like a goth, punk, or emo kid? Yes. It's perfectly normal.
I wear alot of black, my nails are black, but I'm not depressed. I don't wear makeup at all. I listen to a wide variety of bands (Skillet, Superchic[k], Piller, Underoath, OC Supertones, Three Doors Down). But I do NOT label myself as ANYTHING other than ... "unique." Hehe. Maybe a little crazy too.
You realize that sometimes people will go around talking and dressing like something because they need (or just want) attention.
Yes, sometimes you NEED attention. It's ... really important to your well being. Trust me.
Do whatever YOU think is right. Remember, all that stuff ^^^ is from ME and not YOU and is all based on stereotypes that I've seen and heard.

twistedsister17 answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 9:03 pm: No that is really stupid. You can't label people like that. Wow, you can not just say "You wear black, youre GOTH!!!!!!!!" Only Posers call themselves goth, punk or emo. Real people who like real music and have real personalities don't label themselves. People who wear chains and spikes and skulls and dye their hair black and talk about suicide are just posers who want attention. You can't just label people and say "Oh if you're goth then you wear like black and like skulls and dark stuff and if youre punk then you like have piercings." Anyone can look and dress however they want to, and theyre not soup cans they don't need labels. And you can be Christian and listen to rock and stuff, no "gothic people" do NOT worship satan. maybe they did like 100 years ago but this is the 21st century. I wouldn't sugguest that you go "goth" (as you people call it..) because you can't just "go goth." It all depends on your personal style and taste in music. It's all about the music, who even cares about clothes? They're okay but if you care too much about them then you're just as bad as all the abercrombie gals prancing around like the sky's made of cotton candy. And please don't rate me low for this, I'm just telling you the truth.
Mercy_x_Me answered Tuesday November 29 2005, 8:26 pm: I'm preppy with a tinge of country. Where I don't have upfront experience with any of these in particular, I'll give you what I know.
Goth- Dark clothing, hard metal type of music, deadly vibe (skulls, death, blood, all that), spiked jewelry
Emo- Emotional. Meaning, you like to express your emotions alot. The guys wear tight jeans, and their music is very complain-y.
Punk- Band t-shirts, bullet belts, rockerish type of thing going on. I picture this as more of a way to dress then anything else.
Can you be a christian && goth at the same time? Hmm I guess it depends how much you are into your religion. But I would say if you revolved your life around deathly, 'evil', things, it would be hard to follow Christ at the same time.
I think you could be punk and christian. But then again, it depends the extremity in which you follow your religion.
And then how far you take your style. Some people dress goth but they're not all about death and what not. Well, not everybody. It varies. This is the type of question that will be very interesting to look at MANY different answers for because everyone will have a different take on it.
Compare && Contrast
(and forgive me if I don't know everything perfectly straight for those of you out there who are goth/punk/emo)
And remember...it all just comes down to labels :
I mean...in the end we're all people. It's just these names we humans like to throw at eachother. When it comes down to it, everyone has a different way of expressing themselves. Some are mixes of punk && emo, goth && emo, or punk && goth.
Some people take these already made styles and make something new out of them. So, for the most part, no two people are the same. Names are only names.
