Question Posted Wednesday October 26 2005, 3:53 pm
My dogs just chased a Ups man (lol) and he ran for his life. I got my dogs calmed down and I told him I was very sorry. But what can I do to prevent this in the future? I have 2 House Dogs (that stay outside!) and 1 other 'old' dog that bit a boy one time. So what Can I do?? Thanks!

If I was your UPS man, I would report you to animal control. I don't think it's funny at all. If you are unable to control your dogs, you should look into obediance training. Find a good school in your area and if you can't afford schooling than get a good book on the subject and do it yourself. If you don't do something to train them you could find yourself in some legal battles that will result in a large amount of money spent on your part and the dogs being put down. One of the psycological reasons that dogs will bark and attack someone is if for some reason they are feeling vulnerable. If they are kept in a fenced in area or being tied up will make them have the attack first rather than be attacked mental attitude. If those two factors are not involved at all, you need to watch them and see what it is about these people that makes them feel threatened or vulnerable. Did you get them as puppies? If not, there is no telling what kind of life they have had. You are just going to have to train them. I know animals. I can almost say I was raised by a dog. When I was a baby I had a dog that stood guard over me as a baby and he went everywhere I went as I grew up. My parents couldn't even spank me in front of him without his getting into an attack stance and growling. That was the only instance were he would get that way. He was a sweet dog. Dogs are very simple. They think simply. Food/eat, love/hug, toy/throw. If you look and listen you will see that they are trying in their way to communicate with you. If no one has trained them to be agressive, then, there is something that they feel is threatening. Actually it could be that only one of your dogs feels threatened, but, they all go into a pack mentality. If one is afraid, they all do and they join together.
sizzlinmandolin answered Wednesday October 26 2005, 5:05 pm: Since the dogs stay in the house you don't need to tie them up or get a fence for outside or anything. Sometimes stuff like this just happens, but to try preventing it, shut the dogs in a different room or a cage when you answer the door or get some type of indoor fence, (like the ones for toddlers) so that the dogs can't go up to the door. Even though they may be able to jump over it you can train them not to by punishing them when they do. I don't know how much you know about training dogs, but by punishing I don't mean hitting them or anything, but firmly tell them no and don't play with them for awhile when they do it, so they know that you're really angry with them. Another thing you can try is getting the dogs more used to stangers by walking them around places where there's a good number of people. If trying to train them doesn't work, you can always fall back on just shutting them in a different room for awhile. I hope that I was able to help you in some way. Good luck! sexiibrunette answered Wednesday October 26 2005, 4:45 pm: You can keep the dogs inside, tie them to a leash, or get an invisible fence. You could also bring a box of cookies or a bone out with you. Those things usually distract my dog. Like for example if my dog gets a shoe or something I'll get it away from him by giving him a cookie or a bone. You shouldn't always do that stuff though, because then it will teach the dog that if he does something wrong like take a shoe, he will do it again to get a cookie. But in this case with the Ups man I think that it would deffinitely be okay, lol. Hope I could help!
