i looked up some sites for you that might help:

They put the cat to sleep for a little while so the cat wont feel anything. Getting them fixed is the best way to go. [ Advicelady6798's advice column | Ask Advicelady6798 A Question ]
MrsStevenMarkJones answered Wednesday October 26 2005, 2:18 pm: oh geez good luck with this one. i had a cat about that age that went into heat and started chewing on power cords! (i know stupid cat) but all you can do is either get her fixed or lock her in a room. if you get her fixed she will not go into heat again. because a cat in heat is so damn annoying! when mine was in heat she would only come to me. no one else. so yeah, i feel your pain. but we got her fixed and she was fine.
Shortie8959 answered Wednesday October 26 2005, 1:27 pm: This happened to our dog. We got her from an abusive shelter. When she stopped having puppies, they didn't want her anymore. : ( So we took her home. She started to be in heat near the end of July. There's not that much you can do about it. We kept her in the hallway. We blocked off everything else, so she couldn't leave. It took her about 3 weeks to stop. We tried putting a kind of diaper on her, but she kept taking it off, but you can try that if you want to. We talked to the vet about it, and they said that after she's in heat, we would have to wait about a month to get her fixed (she's actually getting fixed this Friday). So you'll just have to wait it out and get her fixed in about 2 months. Also talk to your vet to see what they recommend. Hope I helped! ♥ Erin
