when we had to make a big sculpture in art we used chicken wire first to sculpt the shape we want. so you could make a tombstone shape from chicken wire, it will mould into any shape you want, then you can cover it with newspaper and glue and paint it once its dried and gone hard.

Well, you can get a tombstone in mostly any graveyard, and they should have a wide variety of stuff written on there, good for anything. That's sort of a gloomy project, your teacher needs a puppet show! :-D

Here's a few ideas:

-Cardboard (and paint it)
-Plastic (and paint it)
-Marble (and paint it)
-Styrofoam (and paint it)

And to make it stand, put a cardboard prop on the back of it to make it stand. You know, like how some of those cardboard posters have on the back of it?

Hope I helped! ♥

get some quikrete(home depot), pour it into a mold and let it set for a few days, then paint on the inscription.

Try cereal boxes stuck together (with masking tape would be good) and then papier mache it to make it strong. You could even make a basic wooden frame for it.
