Question Posted Wednesday October 12 2005, 5:14 pm
Well, I adore singing.. to me.. it's a way of life. I do it 24-7.
I don't really know if I could ever do it infront of anyone other than myself! I'm so affraid that I will mess up, or people will hate my voice. Personally? I love my voice... but they always say, "Sometimes, you hear what you want to hear, not what is heard by others." I don't know what to do. In a few months.. I'll be moving to Tennessee to live with my Father. He says that Nashville is a land of opertunity for me. (he and my step-mother are the only ones I've ever sang infront of) Well, my Step-Mother, is persuing her singing career. And I'm SO happy for her. She has the prettiest voice.. EVER I'm not sure what to do..
Anyone have good advice for me?
Thanks..

Get out there and try! Your father wouldn't lie to you and tell you that you have a chance unless you did! Dad's don't usually want their kids to look dumb and get hurt - he wouldn't lie to you. Your step-mom can probably help too; if she's pursuing her music career, she will probably know good singing warm-ups and such. She'll be able to help you protect and perfect your voice, which is good. You already love your singing, and, more than likely, so will hundreds of other people!
I'd say that you should tell your dad that you'd like to try singing in front of people. Get your step mom to help you practice, and pick a good song that you're comfortable with. Then, sing! Good luck!

thatmullingskid answered Thursday October 13 2005, 6:37 pm: Hey kid,
I'm a vocalist as well and I know exactly what you mean. The best way to start is going to be singing in front of people you know and will be supportive. It may seem harder than singing in front of strangers you'll never see again, but your family and etc. will support you and build your self-esteem. When you move to singing in front of strangers it may also be helpful to sing a warm-up song for them that isn't terribly hard for you. Anything else should come naturally I suppose.
Igotamonopoly answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 10:21 pm: If your stepmom has the prettiest voice ever, then the chances of her having a good ear are also high. It seems like you ned to builld up your confidence. I was that way, but I had a Bat-Mitzvah (long story short: I sang loads) and all of my friends said that I had a really great, on-pitch voice. See if you can sing at your house of worship, be it church, temple, mosque, whatever. After my Bat-Mitzvah, I have been asked to sing at other temple funtions, one of which is tomorrow!
LoveNJstyle answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 9:29 pm: Well, i sing too...a lot, and really, you have nothing to lose by singing in front of people. i perform in musicals and that really helps with getting out of your shell so try that out and if your really good, you can sing in them and not just sing to get a contract and make all sorts of money. sing into a microphone and record it to hear yourself. lemme know if you need anything else! <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]
RockStoleMySoul answered Wednesday October 12 2005, 8:26 pm: Okay, well you might not like this, but Follow your heart. You seem like you really really really love singing with a passion. Go for it babe! You never know if you haven't tried, and if you do, which i doubt, but if you do "suck". Then you won't make an ass out of yourself on the big screen like ashleeee simpson!
I'm pretty sure that you have a nice voice, so you should seriously pursue that dream. Don't be afraid...Some people will hate your voice im sure, but everyone has different tastes...Go for it [ RockStoleMySoul's advice column | Ask RockStoleMySoul A Question ]

Feeling nervous and fearing mistakes are totally normal behaviors for something so public. My opinion is that you should sing anyway, despite the fear. My friends who have been in your shoes say once you get going and you start feeling the music, your worries dissolve and you feel amazing. It's what keeps so many singing and what causes others to pursue the fame. So, just go for it, what's the worst that could happen? If you sang and were the worst one there, you could just laugh it off and be like "Yea, I know I suck, my step-mom made me do it" and then skip the public, or if you were awesome like I'm sure you will be, you will have made it over the first, and largest, obstacle in your music career. Have fun, go for it, and good luck! :) [ wrongnstillwrite's advice column | Ask wrongnstillwrite A Question ]
