Don't run from your problems. Deal with them head-on. Recognize WHY you get stressed. Write it out, talk to something, anyway. I tend to make mountains out of molehills, I can only fathom what your stress is like. [ TimmyTM's advice column | Ask TimmyTM A Question ]

Though I understand that you are extremely stressed at the moment, smoking is not the way to cope with it. If you are serious about giving up smoking (there is no such thing as cutting down) then I suggest that you do it now, stress or no stress, because if you put it off it will never happen.
If you want to quit entirely on will-power alone it will be hard but it is possible if you are strong enough. Next time you want a cigarrette, find something that will occupy your hands and your mind. Break old patterns which lead to smoking, ie. instead of your morning cup of coffee and cigarette, get straight into the shower or take out the bins or read a book for fifteen minutes. Remember that it will get easier as time goes by and you will find that your stress levels go down drastically.
If you want to make quitting easier, buy some nicotene patches or nicotene gum or take yourself to the doctor and have them prescribe you some medication which will help you.
This is as much advice as I can give you- the only person who can stop you smoking is you.

Smoking is something you cant exactly just quit off the bat. It has to be gradual. At first, try to get back to a pack a week, and the limit yourself to 5 cigs a week, and cutting down from there. When you're ready, try the gum/ patches.

sizzlinmandolin answered Thursday October 6 2005, 2:48 pm: Different things work for different people, but I can tell you how we got my uncle to stop smoking. My aunt and my mother made a bank account for him and every week he didn't smoke they each put $20 into the account. He would get all of the money after three consecutive months without smoking a single cigarette. He had to be honest and fess up when he did smoke, which he did, but he usually got caught anyways. Basically they paid him to stop smoking and it worked like you can't believe. He started chewing gum because the idea of not having anything in his mouth was a lot of what the problem was. His addiction to cigarettes, became an addiction to gum, just plain old gum. He ended up giving the money back to my aunt and my mother because he was so grateful to them for helping him quit. I don't know if the money thing would work for you or if you can find anybody to do it, but chewing gum, whether it be Nicorette or Juicy Fruit should help. Good luck! There are lots of different ways to relieve stress because again, different things work for different people. Physical activity was always what worked for me...when I got oober stressed I'd just go for a jog or something to clear my mind. Try different things until you find something that works!
