Naps and Sleeping

Question Posted Saturday January 14 2006, 3:42 pm

I'm 15 (almost 16) and female.

A certain *someone* constantly complains about my naps. I take naps because I get tired.

In the past I used to sleep extremely late (we're talking about from 2-4 AM or later) during school nights. However, I would also get half of my other sleep during the day when I got home from school, since at night I was busy with homework. I couldn't resist taking a nap once I got home from school because I'd be way too tired to concentrate on homework anyway if I didn't nap.

This is probably a question for high schoolers and up, because those with a large homework load will understand why my sleeping schedule is this way.

Now back to what I first said. According to that *someone* naps are horrible and it's totally killing my health. Okay, I understand if I don't get enough sleep it is really bad for me. But I do get enough sleep. Not to mention I don't sleep that late anymore, I try to sleep as early as I can (latest is 1 AM so far because of homework).

What I want to know is, are naps really that horrible? If you don't get enough sleep will your health be really bad? If you sleep enough, but part of your sleep is at night and part of it is in the afternoon is that bad in anyway? What advice would you give me in order to help me sleep earlier? I understand that *someone* cares about me a LOT, but it gets really annoying to always be nagged about when honestly I already am trying my best to get a normal sleeping schedule and it is really hard to NOT take naps.

Thanks a lot!

Its not that naps aren't healthy its that your almost 16 and you shouldn't need naps. Teens should be able to stay up almost all night and not have to take a nap during the day. If you are that tired from just going to sleep at 2 or 4 am then maybe something is wrong with you. Like you need more iron in your diet or you need to exercise.

now naps are not bad. i know i like coming home from school, sleeping for 2-3 hours, then waking up and doing homework. its like a quick refresher. the only danger with taking naps is that you sleep so much during the day that you can't sleep at night. as long as the naps are not interfereing with your nocturnal sleeping, then there's no problem. :)

Um, i wou;dn't say thy're harmful, but you could cause bad sleeping habits for when you're an adult...But I crash on the couch for an hour when I get home from school then I'm good for the rest of the night and go to bed around 11-11:30. So I geuss it all depends on what kind of energy you have. (I'd sleep for 21 hours a day if they'd let me! j/k) But no, go ahead and sleep if you want!

You could try going to bed at maybe 11 and then you wouldn't be so tired when you got home. Just try it, because you never know!
Love, Sarah

You do get in "habits" as far as sleeping goes...which you probably already know! I think it is probably better for you if you get all your sleep at one time, but I don't think it will necessarily do you a lot of harm to break it up either.

I have a bad habit of staying up half the night and then napping during the day too. I hate daylight! :)

Hey,

When I was your age I was constantly tired too. Doesn't nessicarily mean that there is anything wrong with you!

At your age you have loads to worry about...... exams...boys...yous parent (wouldn't it be great if you could pause them til you were 21!!!!)

Just make sure you are eating the right stuff (did ya know if you are a regular junk food eater that you eat ar least 12 pubic hairs PER YEAR!! Don't believe me see www.junkfacts.com!)

Don't get caught up in griends falling out, stay impartial cos then everyone loves you and most important of all, DON'T CHANGE YOURSELF!!! Be who you want to be and your REAL FRIENDS and family (and more importantly yourself) will be proud to know you.

However, saying all that, if you ahbe real concerns about your helath then go see your GP.

Take care and if you habe any other questions then e-Mail me at my NEW add: MeHharvey@hotmail.com

Take good care of yourself
