the choking game

Question Posted Tuesday August 16 2005, 3:25 pm

I know people who have been playing the "choking game." Not by themselves though, I know you can die easily that way. What they do is kneel down, and put their head on the ground and take deep breaths. They get up, take a deep breath and hold it, then a friend puts their arm around their neck and chokes until they pass out. Is this really all that dangerous? I've read that people have been doing this since the 1980's, and the only reason its a big deal now is because kids are doing it by themselves and arent letting go of the choke before they pass out. If a friend is doing it and knows when to let go, is it dangerous?

Thanks,
Jenna

Ya..it's definityl dangerous...even when a friend is helping you it doesnt matter because choking yourself is stopping your heart from gettign oxygen and it can kill you...there is no "correct" way to do it....no matter what it's dangerous...its also called "California Dreams"...if you wanna do it go right ahead but i recommend you dont...it also gives you a headache!! ♥

Its dangerous no matter what. Havent you heard the news lately? There has been about 4 deaths because of the stupid "game". It gets addicting and kids do it by themselves and die. Please dont do it, and please encourage your friends not to do it. I dont think we need anymore teenage deaths because of a ridiculous game.

me and my friends used to do something similar to that but the point of it was to make a person faint
a person used to stand next to a wall so their body is touching the wall they take a few breaths and then hold in the last one the other person puts both hands on their neck and presses and they would just faint for like 5 seconds or a little more
but i stopped doing it because it is dangerous

me and my friends use to do that..but we called it the california high..but we did it differently..we would hang our arms down and we would take deep breathes till we got light headed and then someone will choke us and we would fall..it was funny but its very dangerous...then one time we did it to this girl and she fell on the floor and she wouldnt wake up for about 3mins. and when she did wake up she got up and fell back down..the was the last time we did that because we were all to scared to do it again and we relized we can get seriously hurt.

sbloemeke answered Tuesday August 16 2005, 3:37 pm:
Yes, it is VERY dangerous. I first heard of this 3 years ago. The Californa Blackout. It creates severe brain damage (No Oxygen), and has killed a few people.
And it's dangerous even if a person knows when to let go, as it is still a lack of oxygen. The passing out is when the brain has insufficient oxygen, and shuts down temporarily into a sleeping mode. It's still dying for a little while.
I hope this helps!

Oh my gosh yes! I actually was just reading about that the other day. There were stories about this one 13 year old girl that was found my her brother hanging in her closet by a belt and a shoe lace and they knew it wasn't suicidal because they found a note to a friend and it said that she loved "the pass out thing" and another story about a boy. Him and his twin brother did it all the time and his mom found out about it and all they had to say was "it's not like we're doing drugs" but when his twin brother and his mom were in the other room he decided to do the choking game and died. That is VERY dangerous. Even when they know when to let go, there is a chance that they might and it's addictive. If you or a friend is doing it please talk to them and/or get them to stop. I would hate to hear more stories about people dying because of a stupid game. And who ever plays that game really doesn't know what they're risking.

- Hope I helped.
