xo_jenna_respects_ox answered Monday August 15 2005, 9:44 pm: I'm pretty sure that it means that you are free and no one can be your leader or rule you, and there are no laws that you have to follow. Hope i helped!
TheOldOne answered Monday August 15 2005, 3:38 pm: Literally, it means "without leaders" or "without order". Anarchists oppose the very concept of government; they believe that a society without leaders or enforced rules is ideal, and that all governments are corrupt and evil.
In the early 1900s anarchism was viewed very much as "terrorism" is today, or "communism" was in the 1950s. It was the political philosophy most commonly condemned by the mainstream press and society. The phrase "bomb-throwing anarchists" was coined at about that time, I believe. Some anarchists advocate the violent overthrow of social order, but not all of them follow that program.
The punk rock movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s had a very strong anarchy element, and also a nihilistic one.
Alan Moore wrote a very positive treatment of anarchy in the outstanding graphic novel "V for Vendetta". The hero is an anarchist "terrorist" in near-future Britain. A really great read, and not a bad introduction for a layman to some of the concepts of anarchy (although it IS a bit one-sided). "V for Vendetta" is slated to be made into a movie, but as with most of Alan Moore's comic books, the transition to film is likely to be a bad one; Moore has asked to have his name removed from the film.
artistegirly answered Monday August 15 2005, 3:13 pm: From Webster online!
1: absence of government
b : a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority
c : a utopian society of individuals who enjoy complete freedom without government
2 a : absence or denial of any authority or established order
b : absence of order :
Is he a rebel? That could explain it, but carving it in his arm? Yikes!
