No vanilla?

Question Posted Friday August 12 2005, 6:13 pm

I was in the kitchen making cookies when I discovered that I had no vanilla extract. The cookie recipie that I'm using calls for only 1/2 teaspoon of the extract, but I'm worried about how they would turn out.

Is it ok to leave out the vanilla extract, or are there any substitutes for vanilla extract?

Thank you very much for your advice!

<3 Sporkster

Hey,

If you run out of the Vanillia, either add a tablespoon of brown sugar, a tablespoon of Van ice cream or try a couple of tablespoons of french van coffee creamer...it will give it that vaniller tatse you want...

Truth is, when making cookies, vanilla is essential and they won't be very good without vanilla. A good substitute is vanilla beans, but I doubt that you have them. I'm REALLY sorry that I can't help more, but you might just have to go to the grocery store!

The cookies won't taste quite as good, but they will turn out fine as far as consistency and shape go. No worries there.

I say refridgerate the dough and buy the vanilla extract as soon as you can. Add it, mix it, and then make your cookies. No need to ruin a whole bunch of batter and waste your time on bad cookies. Ingredients are there for a reason, they're all important.

HI Sporkster..
I'm sure you have delicious cookies by now. You can safely leave out the vanilla. Have done it many times. If you happen to have another extract you could use it...depends on if you like the flavor and if it would be good in your cookies. Root Beer for example might be a bit yukky. :)

vanilla adds a lot of flavor to what ever you are cooking- so your cookies might be a little bland! I don't think there's a substitute!

well you dont NEED the vanilla but it gives the cookies flavor, but its not like they will taste bad, just not like they should. some substitutes are almond extract, framboise, amaretto and rum.

You could try vanilla icecream! I'm kidding =)

Anyway, it's not a huge deal not to have vanilla extract in your cookies. It just takes away some of the flavour to them. I think you'll be okay without it. You should add a LITTLE extra sugar though. Just a little. Not like a cup or anything.

You could substitue vanilla extract by buying several beans.Split a bean down and put several beans per fifth into grain also you could use brandy or vodka let it sit let it soak for two weeks try it.Shake it or get an issue called "Herb Quarterly"for recipes on vanilla extract.
