Question Posted Wednesday August 10 2005, 11:39 am

I'm doing Community Service at my church helping out for Vaction Bible School and I'm the teacher of 4-year-olds. I need some ideas on what kid of things to do with them. There are 5 boys and ever so often a girl.

ive made a notebook of ideas,
1)trace and cut out hand stencils of the kids hand. then take an ink pad and dip each finger in there and put it on the corresponding finger on the paper hand.
2)out of the kids, pick out 3 kids and put them on the side.make the other kids get underneath a tablecloth or huge blanket, make them lay on the inside so it's hard to get in from the inside, and have the other kids try to get inside
3)everybody sit in a circle and hold hands, then in the middle of the circle, have a plate of things that the kids can pick up with their mouths. the kids have to keep holding hands, but they have to bend down, one at a time to pick something up, and they only get one chance.

you should probably try to read them a bible story from a children's story book, or give them some cloring sheets. kids eat that stuff up.

Little boys are usually very competitive, so try to make everything into a game of some sort. For instance, if you're doing crafts, have them make clean-up into a race - the fastest and neatest wins a prize. You could have a prize system based on Bible themes - who ever collects all the 10 commandments first wins a Bible or something along those lines. Simple kid games can be revamped with a religious theme - hide and seek can become "Find Moses in the reeds" or something of that sort. And if all else fails, teaching them hymns to sing and asking them to create their own prayers are great calming-down activities. Just display a healthy amount of enthusiasm and most kids will fall in line. Good luck!

Crafts. Kids love crafts. Have them do something to do with coloring or drawing, but base it along the lines of God / Jesus .=) Remember: Something to keep their interest, but to also get the point across.

Four year olds generally have a short attention span and are very active. You could try watching the Veggie Tales series. I know they use these videos at my church for that age group.

Songs where they can move their hands go over good. "This Little Light of Mine" has hand movements the kids will enjoy.

Coloring pages with Bible themes is also an idea. You can find them at the site below. Just print them out and let the kids go with crayons.

There is also a sunday school lesson plan you can work from at this site.

Try hiding a stuffed sheep somewhere in the room and let the kids try to find it. Once they do, remind them that God is always looking for lost sheep too.

have them play games. like musical chairs or any other kind of game. you could also read to them or watch movies if theres a tv/vcr/dvd in the room or somewhere you can go that has one.
