I had the same problem. If you really want it you should put your fear in front of you and face it. first try it by yourself on atrampoline, then tumble trak, then a mat, then a spring floor. your coach knows when you have something trust me. i was scared and i have it and i never fell once. when you get it you will be so happy trust me its worth it ]
Well, your trainer is right. Back-handsprings are SOOOOOOO much easier than aerials... i did the same thing, i fell on my head and was freaked out for a while. Eventually, as i went, my coaches would act like they were spotting me, and then as i went, theyd move their hands. If you are still scared, id suggest having your coach stand there and be ready just in case you need a spot or do it on a stingmat or small mat. If you fell on your head teaching yourself how to do it and you fell on your head, chances are you didnt do it right. Now that you have a trainer, everything should be fine. I am a level 6 gymnast and have fallen on my head many times doing backhandsprings. Trust me, just go for it or youll never get to do back-tucks and then the series roundoff backhandspring backtuck. Theyre really fun. So try and just relax yourself and tell yourself you will be ok. If you bend your legs, sit back, keep your arms tight and straight up next to your ears, and kep your head nuetral, i can guarntee you will be fine!! Hope I helped and tell me how it goes!!

this is wat my trainer does..
she puts 5 fingers on my back when she spots
then 4
then 3
then 2
then 1
then she just puts her hand under me to make me feel good
then she takes it out ]
yea i also have a fear of going backwards.. ive been involved with dancing/gymnastics for 11 years. Go to a wall and put your back against it. put your arms straight up in the air. put the palms of your hands on the wall with your fingers pointing down. slowly walk your feet out and hands down. Thats one way how to get a back bend. It is EXTREMELY unlikly to get a backhandspring before doing a backbend so make sure you've mastered the back bend. To improve your back handspring, have a few people spot you on a cushuned mat. need anymore help? drop one in my box. xO'ali ]
just try all you can! be a dare devil and think "if i get hurt,so be it" maybe pray befor you flip backwards, practice on a trampileen!give it your all! you have to believe you can do it to succeed! trust me i know its scary but after i did mine it was a piece of cake! dont thik about that fact that its scary going back wards think of the thrill and how happy you'll be after you land it!you just need to believe, practice, and go for it!!

umm....
Step #1: Learn spelling.. Grammer isn't so bad either.
Step #2: Play the OPPOSITE DAY GAME! Say to yourself, "Self: It's opposite day. I'm flipping backwards, but I'm really going forwards. I CAN DO THISS!"
Hope i helped. ]
i think i can help...i had this problem on the beam a few times :/ lol...ok well first of all you have to BELEIVE IN YOURSELF!! and trust me, your coach wouldnt make you throw something that you werent capable of doing! and trust me, haveing a spot on it forever DOESNT WORK! it just makes a habit thats even harder to break!! and i know someone that went to a psychiatrist and i know it seems crazy but it really worked! so have your mom or coach look into that for you! and remember that you are less likely to get hurt throwing it than riding in the car every day!! and if you dont feel completely comfortable talking all about it on me just IM me and i am 99.99% positive that i can help you overcome this fear!!
*keep me updated on your progress please**

from one gymnast to another...my advice is:
just go for it...thats the only way to get over your fear. and yes, your trainer is right, aerials are WAY harder...and just because you're not scared to stuff frontwards, doesn't mean you won't do it wrong and mess up...lol
hope i helped ]
Heh, I've seen this before, I've done cheerleading for 5 years so I know what you mean. I think you're going through a mental block, there's different things that people do to get over it. One way that helps is to think of a count to do it to every time, other is to go ahead and fall and realize that it's not the end of the world, also not thinking about it and just throwing it regardless of if you'll get hurt will easily bring up your confidence. If you have access to a pool, practicing back dives off the diving board or side of the pool helps too. If you have any other questions, I'll try to help. Good luck with tryouts. ]
If you keep telling yourself that you wont be able to do it or that it is too hard, you are going to be in a constant mindset of fear. Just try to think positive about it, and while you are doing it just tell yourself inside your head that it is easy and you can do it, regardless to what you may really think.
Tell your coach about these concerns, maybe they might be able to walk you through it. If you are really good at it, like you said, then it should get easier the more you practice it.
I wish you the best of luck... ]
