anti-depressants

Question Posted Friday July 8 2005, 2:09 pm

ok so i cut, so obviously im depressed. i cant decide if i should go to a psychologist and have them give me anti-depressants, or if i should just go to our family doctor and get some from him. what do you think? i dont want my parents in the same room as me if i went to the doctor, so how would i do that? id feel bad if i said i dont want my parents to come in, but is that what im supposed to do? is the doctor going to ask me questions? and would i have to show him my cuts? their really teeny and a little red, so they really arent that noticable, but would he still give me anti-depressants? im not wanting anti-depressants just for my cutting, i am depressed so i have other problems other than cutting. thank youuuu

Your family doctor should be able to help. If they can't then they will refer you to someone who can. I think going is a good idea.

You don't have to take your parents in with you.
Yes the doctor will ask you questions. Answer honestly and he/she will help you.

Yes you will probably have to show your cuts. They won't judge you harshly or anything and won't tell the world. Tell him/her anything and everything so you can get all the help you need. :)

Ive been there. If i were you i would got to your psycologist rather then your doctor. If you see your psycologist she will refer you to a pysciatrist which is like a doctor, AND a shrink. He will specialize medicine and depression. That way he'll know all about cutting and stuff. Normal doctors often dont know anything about psycology and they think they do and they say the stupidist things that make you want to kill them like 'this cutting is very immature and stupid' or they'll refer you to a nut house for 'trying to kill yourself' its crazy i swear. Also, they almost anyways agree with youre parents. So i'd stick with the pycologist. good luck.

i think its great that you want to get help if you go to the doctor they may not want you parents in there when ur talking to them alot of doctors are like that if you go to a psychologist theyre going to ask more questions about why ur depressed and why you do what you do antidepressants are a good idea and getting help as soon as possible is suggested the doctor will ask you some questions like how long and how often have you been doing this you may have to show the cuts and just try to figure out what exactly is the source of your sadness and anger thats causing you to be depressed. hope i helped!

Go to a psychiatrist if you think the meds will help you. They can give you meds, and probably refer you to a good therapist.

DEFINITELY GO to a shrink. I was depressed 3 years ago and you wouldn´t believe how it helped me. And listen, don´t be afraid if you have to take anti-depressants, it´s the most common thing in the world; if you need them, cuts or w/out cuts, you will have to take em. It´s not so terrible. they´re designed to help you. :)

PEACE AND GOOD LUCK IN YOUR LIFE!

Go to a pediatric psychiatrist. Your family doctor can recommend one to you. During therapy, you'll usually talk to the doctor alone, but sometimes s/he may want to include your parents.

Don't see antidepressants as an ultimate solution. Even when medication is prescribed, it is supposed to be in addition to therapy. Your doctor may not think you're a good candidate for medication and a better candidate for just therapy. I've been on nearly every antidepressant out there, and believe me, it's not a cure-all.

hey. yeah i used to cut myself. i went to a physchologist and got help from him. one of my friends went to a doctor, and he sent her to a physchologist. i would go to a physchologist because he knows more about mental stuff then the doctor. and yeah you just ask your parents nicely to stay out in the waiting room or whatever. i don't know about the doctor, but the physhologist asks you a few questions about why you did it and how long and simple stuff like that. and my physchologist didn't give me anything but 3 weeks at a mental hospital. but mine were huge and right on my veins. i think you can ask for anti-depressants, just make sure you mention all of you're other reasons for being depressed. good luck.

It really doesn't matter where you go. They will mostley give you the same treatments at either your family doctor Or getting a psychologist. But on my opinion, i would recommend a physcologist, basically because he can talk to you better, you DONT have to bring your parents/family in if you dont want to, and they really really help. Anti-Depressants would probably do best for you in your situation. But take care.

honestly i think you should go to a psychiatrist. medicine isn*t just gonna cure you right away though counseling from a psychiatrist is needed to. I was to the poin of being suicidal about 2 years ago and went and saw a psychiatrist and got help and it did a lot. IDK if they will make you show them your cuts or not, and you don*t need your parents in the room with you because when you're alone you confess more. I hope i helped and hope you're feeling better soon. best of luck hun, chelsea

I can relate to your situation very easily, simply because i used to be the same exact way. It all depends on if YOU want help, which hopefully you do.. The doctors will give you anit-depressants if you are depressed to the point where you are thinking of doing something that could cause you your life. The doctors will make you show them your cuts.. but they will speak with you alone if that is how you want it. Don`t feel bad, most people feel more comfortable without their parents in the room, i know i did. The doctor will ask you question to find out how serious your depression is and how far you are going to take the whole situation before something lifetaking happens. i hope i can be of some help, i have tons more advice on this subject, so if you need it, i`m here. good luck !!
