Question Posted Friday July 1 2005, 8:01 pm

i usually dont have confidence issues like this, but i needed some help, lol.

i`m going to a new high school this year, with mostly new kids. i want to try out for the football cheerleading squad. tryouts are in late july. anyway, i don`t know why, but i`m having confidence issues about it. i`m not sure what they expect of us, i`m afraid i`ll screw it all up, and i`m afraid i`m going to embarrass myself since i haven`t done cheerleading in such a long time. should i just go for it, or forget it?

i`m also shy to tell my family and friends that I want to do it and i don`t know why because really looking at it its not a big deal. i can dance and stuff, but like i said i don`t know what they expect. ugh, can someone give me some guidance?

Hey girl. Im a cheerleader myself. What my coach looks for it determination. She gets upset whenever she hears "I cant do it." For cheerleading, it helps when youre loud, willing, determined, and somewhat hyper. It will definitely help if you can do cartwheels, round-offs, and things like that. A back handspring would be great, but if you cant do one, then you should be willing to try it. It isnt all about being in shape, and being a skinny little blonde. Strength is great too because stunting is a huge part of cheerleading. If youre small enough to be a flyer, then it helps if youre not scared of heights or anything. If youve had any experience with dance or cheering, then thats gonna help you a lot. I hope I helped, and if you have any more questions about anything, cheerleading too, then just drop one in my inbox. Good luck! Definitely go to try-outs, and try your hardest. Have confidence in yourself, and youll do great.

ok first of all they usually look for people who are loud, can dance, do flips and stuff, and in shape.
also it depends on how confident you are. so if you think you can do it....GO FOR IT!

hope i helped

well, i think that if its omthing you ahve done b4 and really wanna do then you will do fine just start practicing and stretching now and then smile alot and be loud! then at tryouts youll be more laxed and you can do it! practice everyday during tryouts! doing school activities like this makes it easier to go to a new school also! if your close with your friends and family they will suport you and wont judge you on your decision and if they arent then ill be here to talk to if you need support! i hope i could help, if there is ne ting else then just drop one in my box okay? x3 hannah

Whenever you go to tryout, what they mainly expect from you is:

-gymnastics ( if you know any )
-being loud
-cheerful and happy
-knowing the cheers
-have a good rountine ( and doing dance really helps that, cause if you don't do gymastics, that still shows you're flexible and such...)

and I would just tell your family, because if you have any older sisters or anything, maybe they can help you out.. and if it's no big deal, then I'm sure your family will support you 100% =)
hope I helped! and good luck!! =)

i say just go for it! im a cheerleader myself and it never gets easy but just keep trying! your really never going to know what to expect with ne team [even if u have gone to that same high school and been on the team before] you could work on your jumps by doing drills and stretch everyday for more flexibility.. just work on it! dont even worry.. just try your best.... keep me posted! You should go for it, the tryouts arn't for a while so you should think about a tumbling class a dance or cheer squad for the summer

Well, going to a new high school has got to be a very stressful, anxiety-filled event for a teenager. New people, new "social expectations"(which you may not care for, but I know some people do), etc. All you have to do is have confidence in yourself! Make a few new friends at the tryouts, and I'm sure that'll take some of your anxiety away. Ask them for tips, tricks, etc. on how to be a better cheerleader. Go for it! If you want to do something, always always ALWAYS do it. If not, you might regret it.

Just tell your mom/dad/siblings that you want to try out and would like their support. I'm sure they'll support you all the way.

If you want tips and tricks for actual gymnastics type cheerleading, MsPineapple.com is great for that. They've also got forums for you to discuss other types of cheerleading (ex. dancing).

I hope my advice helps you.

Go for it if you got the skills why not use them . You never know until you try you maybe be mad at yourself one day because you didnt try out and you missed on a great chance . Positive things may come out of it such as you making new friends and becoming well known around the school:) what is there to lose? I hope I helped.
