Eating Disorder

Question Posted Sunday June 26 2005, 5:46 am

I have the first symptoms of an eating disorder (yes this can be in Mental Health, it's a mental problem not a physical problem) and I'm really worried

I might sound crazy right now but there's this constant battle in my head. One part of me is saying not to do it that I should go and eat and the other is saying no! don't eat it's not worth getting fat.

I have no one I could talk to and except for parents and they would go crazy.
Ughh It's driving me crazy! I don't want to go and eat for then to realise I shouldn't have done and then go and binge and bring it all back up. Please help me.

Wow! I've been going through the EXACT same thing for the past 8 months!
Here's my story: I starting throwing up 8 months ago and about a month after i started my big sister found out and made me tell my mom...i was so mad because i didn't want them knowing and they told me that i had a problem which at the time i thought i was fine...in the middle of all that i started collapsing A LOT! i almost died..anyways none of my friends know a thing...but like my sister and mom watch me like a hawk now...which ive gotten to where i realize that it helps if you have somebody to keep you accountable (ex:i write down everytime i eat and throw up and then @ the end of the week my sister calls and she asks and then we talk about
why i felt the urge to (many times idk)...ive gone from doing it 2-3 times a day to 2-3 times a week...I PROMISE YOU GET THROUGH THIS! if ive come this far, anybody can!<<< youre not the only one who's going through this!

With all that said...(1)tell someone you know well and that you trust & you know wont judge you & that will keep you acountable...(2)find out the long term effects & if you have any..
( those didnt scare me at first bc i didnt have them & didnt think i ever would...now i have many) (3)start running or playing a sport...it takes your mind off of it..ive found you dont think about it as much when your playing/practicing...(4) you could talk to a conciler...they could help you...as 4 me tho i refuse to see one...
* I know exactly what your going through and i know it sucks...it is so much more serious than what i first thought(just so you know)
I'll be praying for you! If you need anything just drop it in my inbox!

Hey hun. That used to happen to me too. You should talk to someone you really trust. I would be nice to talk to your parents because they know you best..but talking to a close friend would help. Eating and binging (sp) is not good, but you probably already know that. All I can say is talk to someone you can trust. Good luck! <3

Okay, if your parents know how serious eating disorders are then they know that it is a serious problem that you need to see a dr. about. They won't go crazy if you honestly have a disorder. They will do everything in their power to help you. They would only go crazy because they love you. Its scary when there is a possability that you won't have your baby anymore. And its scary for friends because you don't know how to help. I have at least two friends with anorexia. One is all better now and is healthy and then one that is in treatment and sees a counselor regularly and he is doing much better now also, so you won't go crazy but pleez go to someone and get help. I hope i made an impact on how serious it is to get help straight away and i applaud you for asking even us for help. Good Luck and if you ever need to talk then just leave a msg in my inbox. Love caitlin

Taking the chance of telling your parents is an option, and one that I will suggest. Though I do understand that there are times when taking things to your parents is not an option (whether it be that they are irresponsible parents or what not). Even so, it's still good to be able to talk to them.

Besides them, however, there are still other people who are available. If you attend school, your school will have some sort of couselor available. If you talk to a teacher you trust and just tell them you have some mental health related concerns and that you would like to know who to talk to about them, they should point you in the right direction.

Please understand, getting fat is not a bad thing - there are only people who say that it is, and people are stupid. You are who you are, and if people can't see beyond your flesh, they aren't worth your time. (Still try to be polite and friendly, just don't let them be the ones who decide what you should do and who you should be.)

I don't know whether you are actually overweight or just paranoid of it, but either way, you need to remain healthy, even if that means being a number of pounds over your ideal. If it turns out that you need to lose weight (which I doubt), don't purge to do so, and don't stop eating or refrain from eating enough. These will leave you crippled in the long run, and who cares what your physical appearance is if you're debillitatingly lacking in nutrition.

Lastly, surround yourself with people who love you and care about you - they will be one of the best sources for support through this.

I think that you should take the chance of telling your parents. The most probable reason on why they would be upset is because they would be shocked. But most importantly they would want you to get help. I mean, if something ever happened to you and they never knew about your problem they would hate themselves for never finding out. Yes, talking to your parents is the best way to get help. I wish you you all the luck in the world. And I hope my advice helps you out in anyway possible.

OnMelikeLAMB answered Sunday June 26 2005, 12:26 pm:
ok, so let me tell you what can happen if you stop eating:
a.) your body will shutdown which will put you in a hospital and make you VERY sick
b.) you will become very weak because your body has nothing to digest
c.) and i am sure you parents will FLIP OUT if they find out what your doing!
now do you really want all those things to happen to you hun? i say that you need to start eating again, but lay off all the junk and start eating healthy! starving is definitely NOT the way to lose weight, that could only make you lose your life! just start doing pushups and situps in your room every day and maybe even start an activity to keep you in shape! i really hope you start eating again because i dont want anything bad to happen to you. just remember what your doing is very dangerous. i hope you keep my advice in mind! good luck!

I know how it is with battling things in your head, its actually just thinking things through its not having battles, you know? I am uncomfortable with my weight and i have thought about trying a eating disorder but i realized that there are so many other ways to stay healthy and loose weight in a healthy way and not with an eating disorder. It's great that your trying to stop this. It really is soemthing that should be stopped because the side affects of it are really bad:

Weight Loss-Often in a short period of time. At least 15% of original weight
Cessation of menstruation
Paleness
Complaints of feeling cold / low body temperature
Dizziness and fainting spells / low blood pressure
Bone mineral loss, leading to osteoporosis
Irregular heart beat which can lead to cardiac arrest
Loss of muscle and body fat
Hair Loss
Dry skin
Behavioral

Restricted eating, sever diets, fasting, â??vegetarianismâ??
Odd food rituals, food combinations
Avoidance of social situations where food may be present
Compulsive exercise
Dressing in layers to hide weight loss, or keep warm
Bingeing (may be secretive or infrequent)
Distortion of body image (seeing self as fat even when emaciated)
Intense Fear of becoming fat, regardless of low weight
Use of laxatives, enemas, or diuretics
Interest in cooking and feeding others
Attitude Shifts

Mood shifts / depression / anxiety
Perfectionistic attitude
Insecurities about capabilities regardless of actual performance
Self-worth is determined by food intake
Social isolation

Those are all side affects of Binge Annorexia and Bulimia.

You should just forget whats going on hin your head and just choose to eat. Just, eat healthy, become a vegitarian! Start doing things to keep your mind off of eating, but still eat breakfast lunch and dinner, well usually i dont eat breakfast but it's actually healthy to. Start working out! That will keep your mind off of it, and you'll feel good after you run a treadmill or lift some weights. If you eat healthy and exercise daily i'm sure you could loose probably at least 30 pounds in 3 months. But! If you are like 90 pounds, then you might not want to do that lol, maybe just work out a lot but still eat healthy.

Do people make fun of your body and thats why you want to stop eating at times? People used to make fun of me and i got so mad. But i sucked it up and told them to go screw themselves. I'm just trying to find out from you where it all started...

And, How old are you? A healthy weight coudl be from 90- 130 pounds for a 13- 19 year old girl. Usually its higher from 16-19 year olds.

If you ever need someone to talk to you can always talk to me.

Just remember that there are always teen hotlines and guidence counselors in your school and if no guidence counselors in your school you could go talk to one from a different school, and they will help you best they can.

I really hope I helped and if you ever EVER Need anything just IM me on BreenzyWeenzy7
Good Luck.

K2204 answered Sunday June 26 2005, 10:09 am:
you have to eat, its better to be a little over weight that a little under, i think. just make sure when you eat its healthy. and i am not talking a carrot for a meal, i mean maybe a salad or some pretzles, some special K cereal, some carrots and ranch dip, a low carb bagel with low fat cream cheese, an apple with peanut butter and rasions. cut back on the candy and sodas!

water helps alot! try, when your hungry, to drink a lot of water, and then eat, the water will fill you up, and is also much better for you than the sodas and other sweet drinks!

hope this helps!

please leave feedback!
