i have insomnia too, have ever since i can remember. Basically, your either really stressed, or its something physical. Try not eating past 10, or not drinking as much soda or coffee. Also, try drinking a warm glass of milk before bed. Sleeping pills are never the answer, you want to take a little amount of pills as possible ever. You can also try like writting poetry or in a diary about things your really stressin about or just have on your mind before you go to bed. It should help.

If you'd like to sleep earlier I have some suggestions that might help you.

1. Stay up for a whole 24 hours if you can. If you can't, I'd try to stay awake for as long as you can, taking a quick nap, and waking up. After a day of no sleep, you'll be awfully tired. Wait until the time you'd like to go to sleep (Like 10 PM or something) and then sleep. You'll sleep like a log and you'll be back on track!

2. Maybe you can't sleep earlier because you're on the computer. When I'm on the computer, I can be on for hours and not feel at all sleepy. You should probably limit yourself from the computer.

3. If you're laying in bed and you can't sleep, maybe it's because you have too much on your mind. If that's the case, take a notepad, and write your thoughts down. Clear your head. In the morning you can go back to those ideas later.

4. Listening to classical or boring music might help. Or you can try any music, actually. Whatever works for you.

5. When you're trying to sleep, don't think about anything. Just clear your mind and concentrate on your breathing. Some people think about being on a rollercoaster, concentrating on the twists and turns. You could also try that, however whenever I try that I end up thinking about how fun it was and then I can't fall asleep. Lol.

6. Try reading. Eventually your eyes will get tired and you'll drift off to sleep.

7. Watch TV. You can put it on sleep mode, so it won't be on all night after you've fallen asleep.

8. Eat something and/or milk. You could also try a warm drink, like tea or hot cocoa. After having a full stomach, you might feel sleepy.

9. Take a walk. After a long walk, you'll feel tired and ready for bed.

I hope things work out for you! =)

omg, i used to have the exact same problem. i would roll around in my bed for hours. i would try reading, watching tv, anything to make me tired. but here's some tricks that I use now. alot of this comes from the way you eat. try not to drink caffinated sodas after 4 o clock in the afternoon. it takes 3 hours for your body to burn the caffein. try drinking milk before bed. medical tests prove that milk has some soothing effects on people that cause them to sleep more soundly. another probable reason is excersize. if you sit around and watch tv all day, by the time you go to bed your body will be sick of doing nothing. try to work your legs a little during the day. I'm not saying start an extreme excersize schedule or anything, it just takes a little to make your body tired.

TheSouthernChick answered Friday June 24 2005, 12:14 am:
I had the same problem during a stressful period in my life. I had a counselor who helped me with a "creative visualization" exercise. Maybe it will work for you, too:

First, lie down comfortably on your bed. Breathe slowly and deeply, trying to relax a bit more with each breath. (You can almost feel yourself going down in levels of stress with each breath.) Be aware of your body parts so that you can consciously relax any part that is tense (watch the neck, shoulders and even those too-tightly-shut eyelids).

Then take a deep breath and hold it as long as you can; slowly exhale. Repeat.

Then begin imagining, keeping your breathing slow and comfortable throughout. (I have two imaginary scenarios I use; here's the first.) I'm in a 10-story department store that has an unusual escalator that spirals down the entire 10 floors, with big loops carrying me past the merchandise on each floor. As it goes around each floor, I have an opportunity to look at what's there. There's only one type of thing on each floor. I think about what's on each floor as I go down. For example, I might think on floor 10 that it's all just vacuum cleaners. There are red ones. Silver ones. Black ones. Ones with bags, ones without. Upright and canisters. Handhelds. steam cleaners. (Make the list as long and as detailed as you can, calmly.) Then you feel the escalator taking you down to the next floor, slowly. Then imagine different items on floor 9, and so on.

Personally, I've never gotten further down than the 8th floor before I'm zonked out. The key is to think of it as a passive, observing experience, where you are just being carried past the view.

As an alternative, I imagine I'm at the top of a very tall, gently sloping mountain meadow. There are 10 distinct fields stretching out before me, each with a different kind of flower. I walk down, "experiencing" the flowers in each meadow as I go. I try to make it as detailed as I can, thinking of the colors, the scents, the feel of dewy grass brushing against my legs and sunshine on my shoulders, etc. The key again is to observe details dispassionately, slowly and in great depth. Again, I've never gone past meadow 8 or 9 before I'm asleep.

When I was just getting started with this technique, I had a tape that my counselor had made, talking me through this in low, soothing tones. Later, I made another tape myself. In recent years, I haven't needed the tape at all.

Hope this helps. Best wishes to you -- insomnia is such a pain!

Here are some simple tips to get a better night's sleep:

1. If possible, go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

2. Avoid carrying activities such as eating and working in your bed.

3. Avoid strenuous activity two hours prior to going to bed.

4. Avoid caffeinated beverages in the evening. Some people may have the same reaction with drinks with concentrated sweets, or alcohol.

5. Avoid eating heavy meals at least two hours prior to going to sleep.

try not consuming large amounts of sugar and caffeine close to bed time, even during the day, maybe take a sleeping pill just to make you drowsy, and if all else fails then talk to a doctor...
good luck! i hope you get some sleep
