I had a pretty bad cold over the weekend, and since then, I haven't had a voice. I've been taking it easy with it, taking medicine and such, but I need my voice back. I'm trying out for choir and I need a voice. Any remedies or medicines that will get my voice back quickly? Please help, I need a miracle. I'll rate for effort.

BeautifulMadness answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 7:50 am: Don't even TRY to talk. I lost my voice a couple of weeks back and it came back twice as fast because when I started croaking again, I didn't use it at all, and I didn't strain my throat by trying to talk when my voice was lost. Dose yourself up on LOADS of strepsils or something to that effect - take something medicated, not just throat sweets. Try 'VocalZone' throat tablet things - my friend who sings uses them and apparently they clear your throat so it might work. Go to your local pharmacy and write down on a piece of paper, 'Hi. I've lost my voice. Got any medicines that will help?' You might get laughed at a little but at least these people will know more than us lot :)
Oh, and drink lots of water!
Blessed Be,

Igotamonopoly answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 1:29 am: mmkay. Some of the advice here isn't accurate or correct. First off, whispering DOES use your vocal chords, just very softly. Carry a pen and paper around and write everything. You would be amazed at the quality of your voice if you don't use it. Next, warm water (as warm as you can drink it) with lemon in it helps too. While you can't sing, do ear traniing if you have a piano or pitch pipe to help you better prepare for the audition. If you still have no voice, show up and explain. Let the teacher see that you CAN'T possibly try out. That's more convincing thatn a letter. I wish you the best of luck!! [ Igotamonopoly's advice column | Ask Igotamonopoly A Question ]
karenR answered Wednesday April 6 2005, 12:20 am: ok, don't use your voice. I mean at all. If you have to talk whisper so you aren't using your vocal chords.
Drink plenty of fluids. Try tea (yuk) with lemon and honey in it. Or just water is good enough.
Inhale steam from a pot of boiling water. Just boil water in a pan. throw a towel over your head hold it over the steam and breathe. Be careful you don't get to close until your used to it.
last but not least hold warm washcloth to your throat.
icey0990 answered Tuesday April 5 2005, 11:06 pm: lets see..
-drink pleenty of water
-try taking a hot shower and just letting the steam get to your lungs..i sometimes just let the shower run..i shut the door and the windows and i let the steam sooth me.
If i were in your spot, i would also talk to the choir teacher..or write the choir teacher a letter being that my voice was bad..and explain my situation and ask to try out when it gets better. Teachers can be cool people and they can be understanding..so try it and who knows the teacher might say "rest up so you get a fair shot."
-what about the vix vapor rub? ask your mom if that would help..i would immagine so..because if you rub it on your neck it might sooth your voicebox? worth a try right?
best of luck with it all!!
-remember..rest your voice and try not to talk too much
